Wounded Soldier: Military Wants Part Of Bonus Back

The U.S. Military is demanding that thousands of wounded service personnel give back signing bonuses because they are unable to serve out their commitments.

To get people to sign up, the military gives enlistment bonuses up to $30,000 in some cases.

Now men and women who have lost arms, legs, eyesight, hearing and can no longer serve are being ordered to pay some of that money back.

One of them is Jordan Fox, a young soldier from the South Hills.

He finds solace in the hundreds of boxes he loads onto a truck in Carnegie. In each box is a care package that will be sent to a man or woman serving in Iraq. It was in his name Operation Pittsburgh Pride was started.

Fox was seriously injured when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle. He was knocked unconscious. His back was injured and lost all vision in his right eye.

A few months later Fox was sent home. His injuries prohibited him from fulfilling three months of his commitment. A few days ago, he received a letter from the military demanding nearly $3,000 of his signing bonus back.

I blame the democrats in congress for not funding the war! What choice does the executive have?? They need money from somewhere! Sheesh...

This is why they should send the mexicans they pick up crossing the border illegally (or hell...LEGALLY for that matter), over to Iraq...

Someone should point out it's a bonus for enlistment, not a bonus for serving your entire term.

Assholes.
Not that i disagree with you, but a technical point..it is a bonus for serving your entire term, you have to commit to a set fixed period of years, usually 6, to get the bonus for the re or initial enlistment. You also sign the paperwork that says if you are involved in a disciplinary matter, or in some other way default on the terms of your enlistment, you will forfeit the bonus.

No small print about getting hurt doing your duty. he was entitled to the entire bonus and has since had the matter cleared up.

I'm sure the government will also more than cover his living costs for the rest of his life. I think they call it disability and it's more than enough for your mortgage, car payments, loans, paying back your signing bonus etc. :twitch::twitch:

Compassionate conservatism and faith based initiatives at work again! Praise Jesus!
Not quite sure what that has to do with military contracts...but, sure. I'm glad you could share your general disdain for organized religion and christianity in a thread about the military's lack of care for it's own.

Again ,gotta point out that the military is a HUGE machine with millions of employees. Paperwork snafus happen. Much like the deceased veterans getting letters from the military urging them to reenlist. Many departments within the department never cross communicate and these things happen. Sad, yes.
That particular soilder did in fact have his bonus paid to him and the letters demanding repayment have stopped.

Oh by the way, I know many hate President Bush and that's fine, but he knew nothing of this when it happened and has no direct oversight of the millions of day to day administrative functions of all the departments of government. I don't agree with him at all anymore but that was a flame bomb. And since when did the military operate as a faith based initiative? Praise Jesus? Is he the Secretary of Defense?

Yeah, it's not like the Republican and Democratic parties ever parade their faith about to get votes. You're right, religion has nothing to do with everyday American life. I should have never injected it into any topic...

It's not just Christianity, by the way. Don't feel personally hurt. I think all religions are stupid.

but he knew nothing of this when it happened
Sure, he didn't sign the letter asking for the cash back, but he will be in part (and sometimes wholly) to blame any ill that comes out of a war he and his administration manufactured. Were there any good to come out of it, I would also credit them with that. Alas, there is no good to come out of it.
