I think Santa Cruz is to the Gila monster as Supreme is to the Mexican beaded lizard, or possibly the Guatemalan beaded lizard.

They can't get you efficiently quite like a rattlesnake, as I understand it,they have to chew on you for a while.

Mexican beaded lizard
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Beaded lizard)

The Mexican beaded lizard (Heloderma horridum) is a species of lizard in the family Helodermatidae, one of the two species of venomous beaded lizards found principally in Mexico and southern Guatemala. It and its congener (member of the same genus) the Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) are the only lizards known to have evolved an overt venom delivery system. The Mexican beaded lizard is larger than the Gila monster, with duller coloration, black with yellowish bands. As it is a specialized predator that feeds primarily upon eggs, the primary use of its venom is still a source of debate among scientists. However, this venom has been found to contain several enzymes useful for manufacturing drugs in the treatment of diabetes, and research on the pharmacological use of its venom is ongoing.

Threatened throughout its range by overcollection and habitat loss, it is a CITES protected species. The Guatemalan beaded lizard (H. charlesbogerti ) is one of the rarest lizards in the world, with a wild population of fewer than 200.

The lemma to the theorem here, is that Supreme is calling their customers Eggs. What the hell is up with that metaphor?

May I present to you, MORE categorization (and catch phrases)-

"As we approach the holidays, we're excited to finally be releasing our new video review series, the first annual Pinkbike Field Test! We took 12 of the most important new bikes, from light trail bikes to full "super enduro" monsters, and put them through their paces on Whistler's incredible trail network. Subscribe to our YouTube page to see the last few Field Test videos as they get published daily."

I guess my old all mountain, err, umm, I meant enduro bike is just an average bike. What must I do to make mine a "SUPER enduro"!?

SuperEnduro isn't a new term. It's been used to describe 160-180mm travel enduro bikes since at least 2015. Pinkbike's
"SUPER ENDURO
(or whatever it's called these days)"
category headed title should have been a clue to it being nothing new.

Did you hit your head recently?

First I've heard of it...then again, I haven't picked up a magazine in years, so I'm probably not "programmed" correctly.

TBF I'd never have heard of Super-D if i didn't come here. It's probably more of a Euro vs US thing.

Canyon's Torque was classified as a Super Enduro bike when released in Germany in about 2014
The Canyon Strive and YT Capra (among others) kinda followed suit staying fairly long travel and fairly burly/agressive but climbing better.
So maybe it's even just a German thing. would make sense as to why it didn't catch on world wide ;)
Who knows the origin. Maybe it came from a wrongly interpreted Barelism.. He does like to say "super" a lot ;)

I stopped buying pushbike magazines around 2009/10 when Dirt started including non DH shit in their mag

Can confirm, this was started by a German bike mag. Their test categories are (constantly changing with IMO lots of overlap):
XC Race
Trail
All Mountain
All Mountain Plus
Enduro
Super Enduro
Freeride
Downhill

They don't test freeride and downhill bikes ever, but with the popularity of enduro bikes they needed to include those long travel enduro/freeride bikes. So they just called them Super Enduro. I secretly think it is their revenge on the manufacturers: whenever the manufacturers release a new standard they invent a new bike category that the manufactures need to make a bike for to be included in their tests. :D

Makes sense. The online magazine Enduromag or wahtever it's called is half German, half UK and most of the UK content is provided by Trev Worsley who rides local to me. It's pretty much Enduro wannabe centre of the UK so I can see how it'd quickly become an accepted category here. I should probably add it's not a category I'd generally mention or ever say out loud. I still refer to Enduro as XC because that's what riding up hills to ride down descents in a loop always was and fo me always will be, no matter what folk dress up like to do it these days.
I'd always thought of my Capra as a Mini DH bike as it's shorter than a trail bike has a sub 65deg H/A, STRONGWHLEELZ™ and lowAF™ BB but now that everything else in the world has gone to LongAF™ geometry I suppose it'd be considered more of a slopestyle bike, even though it totally isn't.

All mountain plus?
All mountain was/is their definition for 120-130 mm travel XC-ish trail bikes, all mountain plus was I think 130-150 mm travel but still XC-ish geometry.
One good example for how the manufacturers try to cater to these categories is Radon with their Slide 130 (AM) and Slide 150 (AM Plus).

What category would a full coil, long, low and slack 135mm be in?
"Aggressive trail bike" of course!
They would for sure rate it low though as "the weight is not worth the minimal performance gains over air". :brow:

Got some new juice.

This is the industry saying this. This is published on a major industry website.
