That was a thing too. Almost 20 years back to the day Redbull put one on here (*Innerieithen, scotland). invite only and ran it at night.
A DH track was put together a little wider and straighter than the usual tight narrow tracks we have here, lips were built into blind landings, Elite/Expert riders contacted at short notice turned up with cobbled together lights, ropey uplifts took them to the top to race, While racing 'tog's waited in the tree with flashes to set off off into riders eyes as they tried to negotiate wet root strewn corners.
No crocs or sharks would take the gig as it was too cold.

*The one place with even more history as a DH venue in Scotland than Ft William
yea, i remember it was a thing, but didn't remember the specifics.

This is pretty minor compared to WhatsActuallyWrongWithTheIndustry, but we do have some Packaging Enginerds here.

Has anyone purchased a Sram Eagle shifter recently? I got one in the mail last night and lol'd at the size of the box it came in. The box for the shifter is bigger than the Eagle cassette box.
Yup, just nailed a pet peeve of mine.
Useless un-needed consumption.
Same as grocery stores who change out perfectly good display cases every 3-5 years.
Give me rack shelving, open faced cardboard boxes and cheaper prices with less landfill.
For fucks sake, your damn green pepper now comes in its very own cellophane package, still broken and bruised as all get out, but hey at least it was "protected" :banghead:

Can ya tell I just got back from a trip to the grocery store?

I figure the weight of the packaging from all the shit from my new bike build will exceed the total of the built bike.

I blame those damn youtube unboxing channels and people who start a review by rating the packaging in general.
It irks me beyond believe when they nearly get a nerdgasm about the quality of the packaging :bonk::crazy::twitch:
Seriously, they talk 15 minutes about how nice a damn cardboard box is, then 3 minutes about how the 1000$ phone that came in it is basically the same as its predecessor.
Makes me want to punch them right in the face every time.

got a picture?

also, as the kind of person you're describing, you'd be surprised at how many times packaging solutions aren't designed by actual package engineers, but by industrial designers.

Apparently the lizard overlords are not impressed by your porn cycling club:
https://www.bbc.com/sport/cycling/47483219
"A cycling club made up of adult entertainment workers has lost its British Cycling affiliation - after the governing body said its name might damage the sport's image."

The sport's image? Damaged? fuck at this stage thats about all it has going for it.

Shouldn’t it be a collab between the packaging engineers and designers? (Graphic or otherwise?)

Bigass cassette box on left and shifter box on right. Shifter box is a centimeter or two taller.

It's helpful, however they don't need to be mutual. Design is just focusing on function of making an emotional connection, while packaging engineering is focusing on technical function.

I know people like to blame apple and steve jobs for a lot of silly shit, but I do trace the whole packaging nerdgasm thing back to the ipod and iphone.

In my industry it's to comply with government regulations and international standards (ISO, etc)

What's wrong with the industry?? Prices in a Canada... that's what.

A DT Swiss FR560 rim is about $110 USD on ebay (free shipping to my up-state WA address). In store, the msrp is $190 CDN. WTF?! Even with the exchange it's still cheaper to throw my money at US retailers.

Let me put it this way: How many months of pay do you need to buy let's say a new Santa Cruz Nomad CC, fully decked? Prices have been hiking up since a long time ago. You guys living in the country of the almighty dollar might have just noticed, but I still remember when a decent tire's cost was under $40, now we are looking at $90-100 as "regular" MSRPs. And please don't bring out that dated argument of "nobody is dumb enough to pay full MSRP".

Being in the middle of what looks like the worst economical crisis in the last 40 years in my country, I need FIVE months of gross pay to buy a Santa Cruz Nomad CC with XX1 and Reserve wheels. And almost two full months of gross pay to buy the base model. How does that relate to your personal situation? Even taking into account the bling factor and the technological progress, it's still insane how much the manufacturers are scamming us nowadays (and to be clear, I'm not putting @mtg or @hmcleay in the same bag as the big players).

I feel ya, but FYI everyone living outside of USA has had to deal with this for eternity, it's only thanks to mailorder that most international riders can have nice bikes. Now with the big brands banning internet sales, things are getting a bit crazy again. The 2nd hand market is buzzing for sellers and it's becoming the only way to buy for many.

On that note, the other bonus in Canada is having access to PB buysell, maybe it's not for everyone, but for buying bike stuff CA definitely isn't the worst, a lot of countries have a far shorter end of the stick.

That doesn't say much since you don't say if you live on minimum wage or are one of the highest paid in your country...
Thanks for bringing that in, I was just thinking I forgot to include that information. I have what we could call a medium-high paying job. For reference, the minimum earning to avoid poverty down here is about $325 a month as of today.
