Anyone have a Thule 899 Big Mouth rack and a DH bike? Whats the heaviest DH bike you think could fit on it? I'm afraid my new ride(not build yet) will be to heavy. My tires (2.35) should work, but I dont know if this rack could support a 40lb beast.
No I have i think a 899XTR for smaller MTBikes and the way it grips the frame (just make sure you grip it down tight) it wont go anywhere. I think that the tire holders for those a prob bigger too to hold bigger tires. You also strap down the tires too so that helps. But no it your bike shouldnt end up in the car behind you.
I have used a bigmouth on my Bullit, when I had one, and my Tomac 204 (which is definitely over 40lbs) now. No problems, really, even with the funky shape of the Tomac. Nothing a few bungee cords can't solve, anyways. With 2.35s, the tray should be wide enough, depending on tire and rim. I have fit most tires into mine but had to just deflate the tires for big-volume combos (like when I was running a Comp 32 2.8 on a Mag 30).
Yes, I definitely remember being able to fit a 2.5 in there a few times without deflating it. I also think that I might have even got a 2.8 to work on a narrower rim without deflating it...maybe not, though. Whatever the case, you can always just let the air out and put it in the tray. The tire sort of bulges over the outside of the tray, but the strap reaches and everything, so it's not a problem.
As for reciever racks, yeah, I definitely would rather have that. However, it was quite a bit cheaper to get a roof rack than get a hitch installed and buy the rack
