Here's my situation:

I work for a small computer consulting company. I ended up getting a job offer last Friday for a place that i'm psyched for. Turns out, one of my good buddies at work also got a job offer over the weekend. He gave his 2 weeks via phone on Sunday, I was at a client all day yesterday and am going to give my 2 weeks today.

My boss and everyone else is pretty much destroyed after having that other guy give his 2 weeks. The company will be down to 3 engineers after I leave, really tight knit group, almost family like so it's tough. So, when is it best to give mine? Right as soon as my boss gets back from lunch, or end of the day?

To top it all off, it's my birthday as well, and the VP just bought me a wicked nice lunch :banghead:

D'oh! Ask for a raise first. Tell them you got an offer. If they cant match, be on your way. No reason NOT to give them a chance is there?

The reason for leaving isn't so much the money, it's more the other place offered me a better job. Better projects, more field work, etc etc.

No doubt the money certainly played a role, and I know my boss would give it to me if I asked, it's more the job.

The worst part is the VP keeps coming over and talking to me about my buddy, how they would do anything to keep him, etc etc, really lamenting. And in the back of my mind i'm going "....crap this sucks, guilt trip much?"

And I know it's completely business, nothing personal. I just feel bad that they're small, and that it's putting a huge load on the other engineers who are good guys, but swamped at hte same time already. Oh well, life moves on.

do you think that the vp might know that you're thinking about quiting, and he's tryin to do what he can to keep you working there
It's a she actually. She doesn't know i'm quitting, but I think she's trying to let me know that they want to keep us around no-matter what, if another opportunity were to come up that they want to know ASAP so they can make an offer to keep us here.

You gotta do what you gotta do. It's part of the working world. It's going to come as a surprise whenever you go it and would had that guy left or not.
Yeah and that's exactly what i've been telling myself. Usually I have a " **** the world, i'm doing what's best for me " attitude, but I actually like the people I work with so it makes it that much harder.

I'm sure they've had to do the same thing at some point too. It's for personal growth reasons and, even though they'd rather have you there, they'll most-likely understand.

You're probably right, good advice. I'm still waiting for my boss to get back from lunch, so we'll see how it goes.

A while back I left a company I had been with for 3 1/2 years. I handed in my letter of resignation first thing in the morning, effective the end of that day.

Tell them how you'd really like working for them but it is starting to really get in the way of slacking and posting on Ridemonkey.com about how to quit your job... and then tell them, "I'd really like it if they would just fire you already!"

dont take it so personal.
its a business, if they´d have to dump your ass on the street, they´d do it.
of course, not need to be an ass about that... but you just dont have to feel guilt.

Yep, as everyone else has said, it's just business. They expect employees to come and go, and life goes on. Even if they'd like to keep you, they'll understand if you need to leave.

Do it as soon as you can, that's the best way to handle it if you want to treat them nicely. I gave my last company lots of notice because I liked my boss and I liked my department. I handed in my letter of resignation about an hour after I got in that morning... enough time to let my boss get settled and check email, get coffee, etc. so it wasn't a "goodmorninghowareyouohbythewayi'mquitting" thing.

My very cool boss just quit after he was demoted a few months ago. He put his heart and soul into our products, and the powersthatbe screwed him.

Do it ASAP .

So where in the Boston area is this place your leaving that now has 2 positions open ? ? ? I hope its Metro west :)
Newton Centre, www.esient.com

I just looked at my boss' schedule, he's got a big meeting in 30 minutes, i'm gonna do it after that.

I just got a coffee with another one of my co-workers, we were talking about Jeremy (the guy that gave his 2 weeks). I went out on a limb and said I got a new job, he said he had a feeling I was quitting. It was weird, I asked him how and he said the exact reasons why I was leaving, and that it was a good choice for me.

He also mentioned we're ruining his interview success rate, he was the first guy to grill both of us and we're both gone within the year. Jokingly of course, he's a good guy, i'll definetly be keeping his cell #.

Now that you've told someone you better tell everyone soon.

But regardless I agree with most everyone here, if you're convinced you're ready to move, just go ahead a do it. The timing won't matter much to the company, the only difference is the amount of personal torture you put yourself through.
