Funny how the people who whine the most about tipping are the people who used to be wait staff. And people like me who feel that tipping ISN'T AUTOMATIC are generally the better tippers, unless that wait staff are dillholes in which case they get nada.

Nice Guy Eddie: C'mon, throw in a buck!
Mr. Pink: Uh-uh, I don't tip.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't tip?
Mr. Pink: I don't believe in it.
Nice Guy Eddie: You don't believe in tipping?
Mr. Blue: You know what these chicks make? They make ****.
Mr. Pink: Don't give me that. She don't make enough money, she can quit.
Nice Guy Eddie: I don't even know a ****ing Jew who'd have the balls to say that. Let me get this straight: you never ever tip, huh?
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I tip when somebody really deserves a tip. If they put forth an effort, I'll give them something extra. But I mean, this tipping automatically, that's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.
Mr. Blue: Hey, this girl was nice.
Mr. Pink: She was okay. But she wasn't anything special.
Mr. Blue: What's special? Take you in the back and suck your dick?
Nice Guy Eddie: I'd go over twelve percent for that.

not sure you've painted me w/ the whingeing brush, but i've never been part of a wait staff.

what got under my skin is BMXman's (and others) strawman of "fight the system" while really gypping out the people who work under this system. and have no power to change it.

Wasn't talkin' about you.

And while I've never had the pleasure of enjoying a meal with BMXman in a restaurant, I'm confident he fairly compensates a wait staff according to how they do their jobs. Which, in my opinion, is the way it should be.

I really can't believe some responses to this thread. Most of you are upper-middle/upper class, and have plenty of cash to spare (as you can easily blow it on bicycles thousands of dollars), but you can't seem to give a server a decent tip to help them get through college/single parenting/life.
Thanks, assholes. Keep Wal-Marting it up! :thumb:

Really? You feel like vomiting?

If anyone, anyone enters into the food service industry expecting that there aren't a million people out there that don't tip or don't tip well, they're just deluded. Plain and simple.

Some people have reasons for not tipping, some people are just cheap, but part of the business is that you do not get tipped all the time. Suck it up, princess, that's the way life works.

People working in the food service industry have chosen to work there. They knew before they got into it that tipping is strictly optional, and if they didn't think that through to it's logical conclusion, well, then they were stupid.

I don't advocate not tipping, but to get your panties all in a knot over it is stupid. It's like whining that you work in customer service and you can't believe you have to deal with angry people all day. You chose the industry, now suck it up and deal.

Hotel staff (all of them?)
Taxi drivers?

That's not known as a "tip" and it'll either be treated with a blind eye, a a pat on the back, and a nod to go on your way, or you'll be thrown in prison :p

In the US just make friends with the local chief of police and he'll give you a chief's card to get out of some law infractions without fines/points :D

Maybe a police monkey will mail vb one ;)

I'll take one for sure. Sounds like the magic blue suit that gets you free coffee all over town as well as free entry to any sporting event.

You know, I tried to use google to find you a black, midget elvis impersonator and all I got were hits for porn sites. I find that odd.

Anyway back to the topic at hand. I say no tipping for take-outs. Not only that but I cross out the tip line and write "no tip". I've been burned by reasurants writing in their own tips before. That really pisses me off especially if I have left a cash tip on the table when eating in.

Do you tip at Taco bell? I sure as hell dont.

There is no differnce between Drive thru and to-go.
Well (and keep in mind that I don't tip on to-go orders), the point is that Taco Bell or other places like that are bound by laws to pay their employees minimum wage.

The person taking your order on the phone and giving you your to-go order is likely getting paid about $2/hour since they're resturant staff that aren't bound by minimum wage laws.

I put a big "X" through the "tip" and "total amount" sections... I'd never leave something like that blank - figured it'd only be a matter of time before some smart guy decides to write himself in a few extra bucks.

so what does this have to do w/ the service you get? because you think that the person may not report a tip received as income, this is a rationale for not giving a tip?

I am sorry but when someone says "I don't believe in tipping" it's just being ****ing cheap. I have nothing to do with this industry (I am an engineer) but yes it pisses me off that some people have so little respect for someone else trying to make a living (very often students and such).

I understand that sometime a tip is not warranted if the service sucks but 15% for a adequate job is what it should be, giving any less for an adequate/average job is just being cheap. Period.
