Tire Problems

I have had terrible luck with tires lately. It all started when I broke the rear swing arm on my Loco Moto. Titus was kind enough to replace it free of charge, even though the warranty ran out three years ago. They sent me (in less than 5 days) a much more beefy version which has less tire clearance so I’ am not able to run 2.4 Cortez, so I switched to 2.2 Cortez. The 2.2 flats damn near every ride. Also tried Trail bear 2.24 with no luck. I have better luck with stans than tubes but not much. Riding in Austin Tx presents a lot of sharp edge rocks and is very hard on tires.

What effect does Rim witdh have on pinch flating. Currently running DT swiss XR 4.1 rims.

The only tire I have had good luck with is a IRC kujo dh but is wieghs 1100gms and feels like I' am draging a dead body behind me. I' am no weight wheenie but that tire is to heavy even by my standards.

I ride semi- aggressive on rocky (sharp) terrain with 2 foot drops. I wiegh 199 # without gear.

Does any one have any suggestion?

Well, you might consider going tubeless. It is difficult to pinch flat tubeless, and if you Stan's sealant, it automatically seals punctures.

If you are going to stay with tubes, then I would run 40psi in the front and 50 in the rear, given you need more traction in the front but more likely to flat the rear.

Also, the Specialized Fasttrak Armadillo Elite is a folding bead, flat resistant tire, but only about 50 grams heavier than a regular tire. I use their road version with only 1 flat in 8 months of urban riding.

Thanks for the Good advice, unfortunately I have tried all of that. I have run Stans since before you could buy it and learned fast that you can and should always run more pressure in a stans converted tire. Most of my PF's occur while running stans (rim goes though the side wall) When I was able to run the 2.4 cortez I ran it at 38 psi (stans) with no problem, know that I can't fit the 2.4, I run 45psi MINIMUM in various tires (2.24 to 2.3) and pinch flat all the time.

I believe riding style, or lack of, has a lot to do with most pinch flats. I don't have a problem with PF's when descending knarly rock gardens because I able to stay light on the bike. My problem is when I 'am descending short steep shoots preceded by steep inclines were I have to keep my speed up though the dip to make up the other side. Riding light though the dip is my down fall... and I' am fat.

I will check out the Fasttrak Armadillo Elite and Maxxis
Thanks
