Any suggestions for a good XC tire that can also stand up to an ocassional ride on pavement?

I'm usually riding dry and dusty trails and some ocassional steep climbs so a good grip would be nice. :)

I have some Velociraptors that came with my bike. They aren't bad, but that are wearing out and
I ocassionally have to ride a few miles on pavement. That really grinds away the rear crossbar knobs.
I don't ride it around town, there are some trails that happen to have pavement sections that I ride on.

What do you ride? How do you like them?

I ride alot of the same on my XC bike, gravel+loose dirt and some steeps, throw in some rock gardens and then ride around my `hood (blacktop, cement and dirt). I usually get IRC Mythos because you can get them at JensonUSA for $15 each. They are light weight, durable and have a good tread pattern. They also have lower rolling resistance than V-Raptors. I do like V-Raptors but really like the Mythos. I have also had good luck with Bontager tires . You can get them cheap too.

(ACHTUNG! Shameless Continental plug to follow...)

Actually, I'm lying. I wish that Michelin still made the cool Wildgripper S semi-slick from a few years ago. The Jet S does not impress me.

Give the Conti TwisterPro a shot. They're a bit thin for me (1.9) but the tread has gotten rave reviews in the Deutsch bike mags.

Hey Heidi and CC... how often do you replace your pythons? I put mine on in April (I think) and they look like they are wearing and time to be replaced. Is that normal? I ride anywhere from 0-4 times a week.
Mine wore out pretty fast too.

I wound up getting a Continental Explorer at the suggestion of the guy at the LBS. They didn't have a whole lot of selection. Of what they had I was interested in this one or a Michelin whose name I don't remember. :) Had a paddle tread in the middle.

Haven't hit the trails yet, but it doesn't sound as harsh on the pavement as the Raptor did.

Granite, lots of granite
I used to use Conti tires a lot. I ran a Vertical Pro/Survival Pro mix.

The Survival would not stand up to pavement, but the Vertical Pro would.

Another tire that does good in all areas is the IRC Kujo DH tire, you can get it in Kevlar bead in the 2.35 size and smaller. It's a fairly hard tire and lasts a very long time on the pavement. Probably the best do it all tire I know of. Plus no pinch flats with it :) (foam in the side walls) or thorn punctures.

I ride the Bontrager revolt on the front and the jones on the back. I suggest two revolt tires for what you suggest. They come in 2.2 and they take all the vibrations out of the bike for a longer ride.

I ran Conti tires forever, Traction Pro and Leader Pro, they're great fast off road tires. Not too brutal on the road, they roll pretty smooth.

I recently bought the Maxxis Mobster 2.1, It doesn't do as bad as I thought it would on the road, its got ramps leading up to every other set of knobs and the traction off road far surpasses the Contis I grew to love, espically in sketchy stuff.

Good call on the pythons. The WTB nanos work great too.

I'm NOT a conti guy anymore after this weekend...blah.
