I am out west.........but I find the best way to answer this question is to scout out what other riders are running around your parts.....they as a whole....have a better chance selecting the right tire than someone removed via the internet. Ask around most people will tell you what worked like crap and the stuff they find works well at the moment.

The more you ask the better idea you get on what is the hot set up in your area.

Not what you were looking for....but I hope it helps.

The best XC tires I've used are Panaracer Fire XC pros. Aren't the best in mud but work for everything pretty much. For something heavier duty, check out the Fire DH or Mich. comp 16 2.2. Both good all around tires.

I 2nd the Panaracers they are great tires. Never had a problem with traction in the dry, only when things get really wet. I've also had good experiences with WTB and Maxxis xc tires.

IRC Mythos XC 2.1's worked good for me, you have to be careful though, there are plenty of counterfits out there where the knobs will start falling off in about a week's time, make sure to get a set that isn't on the cheapest closeout you can find. They roll pretty darn fast, hook up in the dry stuff really good and don't pack up with mud as much as other tires I've tried.

I also run the Panaracer XC Pro. 2.1. I have ridden them both in UST and regular. Great all around tire. The Panarace "2.1" is more like a 2.2 compared to other manufacturers..

I live on the East Coast as well.

Now that I helped you... I love the Panaracer, but want to move to a 2.3 UST with a similar tread... I have only seen their DH/Mud version 2.3 in non UST with a red side wall (My bike is blue!)

Anyone?

Being that you are from Glens Falls, I second the IRC Mythos XC suggestion. With the shale / rocky terrain that is common here and sh*t years like this wear it's always muddy you want a good wet condition tire. I ran IRC's Mytho's all year and loved them.

I recently moved near Wintergreen VA (rocky/wet/mossy) and I've been looking for a simlar rear tire.

My suggestion would be to consider a tire that offers a good tread pattern + is sticky. When the terrain around here gets wet some of the rocks and roots get slick b/c they have a mossy/slimey cover. My current xc tires are rendered useless in this.

However, I have a pair of Mich 2.8/2.5 dh sticky treads that are amazing in the wet stuff. Now I want something similar but lighter for trail riding. The only problem is that I don't know what tread patterns work well regardess of the sticky compound :(

I'm now considering...

IRC el gato - somewhat sticky?

maxxis 2.3 single-ply slow rezzay(sp?) high roller - sticky

kenda 2.3 kinetic XC version - sticky

I have no experience with any of the above tires, anyone else? I do have experience with 2.24 and 2.4 motoraptors, they suck out here when it's wet. They worked well out in Colorado (lived there a few years) where it's rarely wet.

Anybody have experience with a tire that offers a good east-coast tread pattern + is sticky?

If you like the Michelin's so much, why aren't you considering Michelin tires? They offer all of their DH/FR treads in a 2.2" size (except the comp32), and make XC tires to boot if you want something even lighter.

If you don't mind a little weight, a comp16 in the front and a comp24 in the back, both in a 2.2 size, might be the ticket. That way you get a fairly light, small setup but with some halfway decent sidewalls.

Food for thought.
I tried some xc mich tires a few years ago, I think it was the hot S. Didn't work well for me. Maybe I should look at the comp24 single ply, but I heard that the comp24 does better out west than it does here. Comp16 2.2 is a good idea, but it's too heavy at 1150g. I'm lookin' for something around 750-900g.

Having ridden together, I would recomend the Maxxis Minnions in the super tacky. They hook up exrtrodinarily well in the tacky to mud conditions at Wintergreen. The seem to fair very well in the dry stuff as well.

Just my .02 cents!:)
