TLD D2 protection

How can this helmet possibly offer enough protection when the foam is so thin? I've seen and worn these helmets, and they have extremely thin foam compared to anything I've ridden before.

For this reason I am also considering the TLD SE. My only concern is it will look overly bulky like some MX helmets. Is it as huge as other mx lids?

Arcadian has pics that compate the D2 to the SE. The SE looks much, much safer. My brother commandeered my D2 last summer. i wore an old MX helmet. He was stoked that he had a "D2" but looking back i didnt do him any favors.
He's fast but i want us both protected. THe SE does not look out of place at all.

Before next year, we will both have SE's.

joel

it aint worth the risk not to have a MX helmet.

The SE is not nearly as bulky as most MX lids. I HIGHLY recomend it over a D2 for Downhill use. Ive used both and feel much much safer in the SE, Im not taking any chances with head injuries anymore.

The SE's are seriously nice lids. One of the guys on our team picked one up this year and I think it only wieghed 100g more. D2 looks better as it's smaller but the SE is definately safer.

Here are a couple of pics just to give you an idea of how it looks in use.

I concur. The SE is very non-bulky feeling for a fullface, let alone a MX helmet. An illustration: I put it on at the TLD booth at iBike. I got into a heated discussion with my companions as to which is a bigger waste of money, DH or MX. I was 3 or 4 booths down before I realized I still had the helmet on.

As an aside, weight isn't the only rubric that determines "bulkiness." Fit and design has a lot to do with it also. I went from a Bell Bellistic, which is close to the D2 in weight if I remember correctly, to an Oneal moto helmet, one of the nicer ones. The Oneal is definitely heavier when you heft it, but it is so much more comfortable to wear. I find myself keeping it on even when riding the lift, where I would take off the Bell as soon as I stopped moving.

how old's that kid/guy?
he looks awfully skinny for an adult if he is
btw: cool pictures and good riding/jumping!!

the helmet looks nice though.

i have a small fit problem with the SE helmet the "mouthpice" is quite short, because of that my jaw is in contact with it, not comfy to ride
but the SE certainly is a great helmet

I've got an SE for moto and a D2 for MTB. I don't feel like the D2 is really going to let me down for racing or riding most trails. However, if I were ever doing big jumps or riding somewhere more open than most UT trails, I would be wearing my SE just in case. The D2 still passes Snell and ANSI testing, I'm sure it's more protective than the Switchblade helmets I still see lots of Sportos riding around in.

The new 661 helmet is badass too. Also, $75 less than an SE. I'll def. have a MX helmet for next year.

For what it's worth, the TLD SE helmet is the only motorcylce helmet I have ever tried on that didn't feel ridiculously heavy other than the Oneal 917 or whatever their sweet one is this year. The weight thing isn't that big of a deal though, it's the ventilation that sets the SE apart from every other MX lid out. The inside of the foam is grooved out like the foam on an XC MTB lid, and the vent system actually pulls air through the helmet via front and top ports that are big enough to allow air to come in, and exhaust ports to pull the air through the entire helmet. This isn't some conspiracy to sell TLD stuff, we're a 661 and an Azonic/O'Neal dealer, and I've worn some Shoei stuff. Seriously, best MX helmet ever, it's worth the extra $75.

Yeah there's a weird shadow on his ankle that makes it look tiny. The rider is Cam Somerville a Factory Mountain Cycle rider from Toronto.

both helmets are a large, i couldn't reccommend the SE higly enough, also worth noting is the excellent helmet bag and the spare peak that come with the SE.
Man, that SE is heaps bigger then the D2!

Rennie is wearing the SE as derik stocktin is making all the santa cruz syndicate team wear moto helmets. During his years at yeti he wore a troy lee d2 composite and during the iron horse phasae he wore a carbon D2.

I doubt many people go as fast and flat out as rennie, moto helmets are a bit of an over kill for all but the most serious racers or huckers.

it just takes one crash. whether you a pro or eager sport rider, 30 mph is 30 mph and the resulting impact does not care whether you are pro or sport. Hell, I'd even say, the "greener" you are, the more protection you need.

You pretty much said what I was about too. If you crash into a tree at 40mph, the tree does not care what you are coming off of.
I have been very happy with my D2, but may look into a MX helmet for my next lid.

I have to disagree-
I'm a mid pack expert 30-39'r at the local races. Not superfast by any streach and not a big hucker, in fact I kinda suck but go to have fun. Anyway upper open slope at Mt snow this year, crusin pretty good, 25-30 mph in the wide open I'd guess, got knocked off line & didn't think I was in real deep untill I was up in the air without my bike, still diddn't panic cause I've been on solo flights before ;) -blap- I don't even remember hitting the ground at all, started waking up on the backbord and a little on the ride down, little more with the oxygen mask on.

Why this is relevent is I was wearing my D-2 which I loved and thought was more than I really needed. It had a small scuff or 2 on the outside but had 3 cracks in it from the Inside, the biggest right over where the MRI showed a little crainial bleeding. So I didn't even hit a tree or big rock but my 8 pound squash slapping to a sudden stop did it.
I replaced it with the moto version and it's great. It is a little bigger but it's your head. I found it's surprisingly light and I find it even more comfortable than the D-2. The pads have a nice cut out around you ears so you can hear well and it it surprisingly well ventalated. much better than I thought it was going to be, I have no regrets going with it and can back up all the positive feedback written so far.
If in doubt go with saftey first.

Just look at Arcadian's pics and tell me which one you want on your head when you pop that tree.
My helmet is a Fly Lite II. I think it is still the lightest moto helmet made.
You can find them online for as low as $99.
Or you can pay $425 for a sweet paint job.
My helmets always end up looking like I drag them around on a rope, so I'll stick to the $99 one myself. (except for old my D2, which I took care of.)
Barel had on that new 661 when he won worlds, it looks pretty sweet.

part of the D2s excellent protection is the riders.

they rather break their arm or shoulder then to hit the ground or a tree with their D2 (or SE for that matter)

style is everything :D

exactly...I can't believe folks are actually place more value on weight and style over safety...I will never wear a MTB specific full face again...the risks are just not worth it....I only use Moto helmets...sure they're a bit heavier and a bit bulky but I have this strange obsession with protecting my head

Never ever buy a used helmet. Its just a bad idea. I dont care how good it looks on the outside if a helmet has been crashed in at all, or dropped even from a very low height it will not protect you as it is supposed to. And you basically cant really trust that the helmet has not been damaged in any way when you buy used. spend slightly more and be sure you are going to be protected in the event of a crash
