You have 2 cats? Man there goes all the respect I had for you.
being an ex-carpet cleaning professional I'll interject a quick tip. The best thing you can do to keep your carpets clean is to vacumme regularly, daily or twice daily if possible. Vacumming gets up something like 90% of the dirt trapped in carpet, shampooing only removes about 5% and the other 5% isn't ever coming out. Next time you decide to clean the carpet don't use any chemicals, just water. You'll find that there are already enough chemicals sitting in the carpet from this cleaning that you won't need to use chemicals again for the lifetime of the carpet, the more chemicals you put on the carpet the quicker it will get dirty again.

The cats came with my wife, she had them before we started dating (almost 11 years) so I got stuck with them. Thats good to know about the carpet, it was really looking disgusting and I had to do something. Amazing how dirty the water was after each dump, it aweful to think my kids roll around in that stuff
