Ok, maybe I should have explained. There is a good-natured, ongoing debate between people who prefer gin and people who prefer vodka.

The martini was originally a gin drink - if you walked into a bar and asked for nothing more than a "martini," you would get gin. But somewhere along the way people started asking for vodka martinis, so now people use it interchangeably, to the chagrin of "real" martini drinkers.

Anyway, most people specify the brand anyway (as in "Sapphire martini") so it's not that big a deal. I just thought it was a funny read. I prefer gin and always have, but it's not because of what somebody else told me.
