I scared a cat whom I mistook for a small white dog.

However, the cat was being walked by a couple.

Without a leash.

FWIW:

One of our three cats will accost me sometimes when I take the bike out; I am required at that point to put the bike down and take a walk in the woods with the cat. It takes me twenty minutes or so and I always see things I wouldn't notice on the bike.

Another cat intermittently accompanies Hilarie and me when we walk.

I lived with a siamese cat who used to ride on my shoulder while bicycling in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Out of my mind, back in a moment.
While we were riding one of the fireroads at stewart, we came upon an older couple walking their cat. The cat was terrified of a bike, and the old man was nearly blind. We were yelled at to donate to the fund to pay the attorney fees "if we really enjoyed the place". She was grumpy.

I have cat that likes to hike too. He's a strange cat. It's not the people who own that cats that are weird, it's the cats themselves.

When I lived in LA my neighbors would walk their cat on a leash. I always thought why not get a dog? They're more fun and you don't look gay walking them.
Becasue my wife won't let me get a dog...

Our cat loves to go for walks. It took him a while to get used to the leash and harness, but now he loves it. [hides head in shame]
