Tonight's project: Tuning my 888. Your thoughts...

Howdy everyone.

I know it's winter, and I know I won't be riding my Demo 9 much at the moment, but tonight I'm gunna have some spare time and want to further fine-tune my 888RR. It's a 2004 888RR, as in the right leg has HSCV and the left leg is SSVF.

Now, a little while back I purchased some Golden Spectro 10wt fork oil. I filled up BOTH legs with this (to the proper amounts) (not FULL! :eviltongu ) .. and the fork seems to not rebound fast enough for my riding style / liking.

I was wondering if I could put some 5wt Spectro in the left leg, and leave the 10wt in the right leg. Would that allow it to rebound just slightly quicker?

I'm only running 2 clicks of adjustment on my right leg, and the fork still doesn't feel as "plush" as it used to with the 7.5wt stock oil. (however it bottomed with that, because there wasn't enough oil in there from the factory.)

SO, would this 5wt "mod" be ok for my fork, or what would you suggest?

I'm running stock springs, and about 5cc's worth OVER stock oil height. (so it won't bottom).

I weigh ~173lbs without gear on.

Any comments would be most appreciative.

Thanks!

-Matt

P.S: Yes, I did read the Go-Ride.com article first. :sneaky:

If I were you I'd run 7.5 weight with the correct oil height to keep the "plushness" as well as preventing bottoming. I'm curious as to why you went to the 10wt when you new it didn't have enough oil in it?

Because, when I bought my bike I weighed ~ 135 lbs.

I'm now going on upwards of 175lbs. I figured since I've put on weight (it's all muscle, I've been pumping iron), that I'd need thicker oil.

Maybe I'll just give the left-leg 5wt a try.. and see what happens.

It can't hurt anything, the oil's fresh. :)

The left leg isn't going to effect the damping as much as the 10wt in the right leg... Go back to the 7.5wt in that right leg... I am over 200lbs and still run 7.5wt in my forks.

If you haven't done it already, read Scottie's manifesto on tuning the 888. I hope you have a couple hours to study it, it's pretty in-depth and a good guide to doing pretty much whatever you want to your fork.

Click here and then click on "Marzocchi 888 Tuning." Sorry if you've read it already and this is me beating the dead horse.

ok i wanan know how u gained 40 pounds how long did it take and what did u do..

I've been pumping iron 5 days a week + eating 4,500 calories a day since August 2004.

I've stayed in the same pants size, but gotten a LOT bigger up top.

My quads are like 2" thicker, and the only fat on me is that on top of my abs.

I'm now benching 275lbs, squatting 375lbs, dead-lifting 225lbs, and curling 145lbs on the curly bar. (somewhere around 65lb dumbells per arm if I do them seperate, and don't swing the weight).

I just wanted to get bigger. I was sick of being SMALL...

What else are you taking, when I was younger I worked out like mad and never got those results in so short a time.

Protein
Creatine
Multi-Vitamin
Fish Oil
Flaxseed Oil
Glucosamine

And eating CLEAN. No fast food, no ****-food, and lots and lots of high-protein lean meats.

I eat like 6-8 meals a day... I eat almost non-stop.

Wow...you need to work on your back...If you're pushing those other weights you listed and only doing 225 lower back, then something's disproportionate...I'm 6' 173lbs and deadlifting 315...I hardly ever lift either....your diet is nuts on...I'd recommend NO2 over creatine, but other than that it looks good...glutamine would also be good

My back is actually quite strong. I just don't dead-lift super often to be honest. It's not one of my favorites, so I have little motivation to do it... :mumble:

lol.

I could probably do more, but keep in mind when I did 225lbs.. it was at the end of a 2 hr workout session, and I was BEAT. If I did it fresh, and maxed.. I could probably hit 325 or so. I didn't have a belt handy either.

Next time I do it fresh, I'll let cha know what my REAL weight is on there. :)

My back, bi's, tri's, traps, pecs, and delts are all quite large... I've been focusing on my lower back recently as well.

I'm a work in progress.... :thumb:

P.S: Glutamine... yup. I take 1 spoon full in my weigh-shakes...

;)

Thanks for the kind words guys. I'll keep em' in consideration.

I've not taken anything crazy, nor do I plan to. Just the basics (Protein & Creatine, and vitamins).
I've taken Milk-Thistle a few times, to help the liver along in the breaking down process.
The last time I was at my doc, I had blood-work done, and he said all my numbers were spot on. I'm healthy overall, so I'm definitely trying to keep it that way.
Now... if I could only get my 6-pack to pop! ;)

On a side note, I haven't gotten a chance to change the oil in the fork yet.
I'll probably get to it this weekend. Got busy last night with getting some things done, and didn't have a chance to "make a mess" ;)

W00t W00t.

Finally got around to changing the oil in ol' fork.

Swapped out the 10wt for 125/150 Golden Spectro Cartridge Fork oil.

Feels like BUTTA.
