I have an HP Pavilion g6 that gets HOTTER THAN HELL (shuts off from heat , if I allow it to)

I took it apart (followed a youtube video). Was careful and took my time.

Now the screen is black. I have opened the case and made sure the HD and ramm is fully seated (as per HP website suggestions).

any thoughts or suggestions?

It boots.
Blue light on caps lock is on. Fan turns on. DVD tray opens.

The display cable is usually a wide flat ribbon cable coming from the screen, make sure its connector its not loose or there is not any damage to the cable/connector.

The display cable isn't a ribbon thingy. It is secure though.
Still a black screen.

I'll take it to work tmrw to see if I can get a monitor to work with it. For now it seems to be fvcked.

Is there a device that lets me use the HD as an external drive do I can get at my files?

Yes, but it's usually not quite that simple to yank files from a harddrive, as it's usually encrypted and only the "administrator" can usually access it. Not that complicated either, but you could run into a few showstoppers. The device is available at any best-buy type store.

Ehm, only in very rare cases now is anything on the drive encrypted. Eventually, I'm sure it'll be more common, but right now the only time anything on the drive is encrypted is if you've deliberately chosen to do so.

Usually what happens is you just have to go into the drive/folder properties, and change the owner to your current user on the machine that you're using to access the drive. It'll still have the permissions set to the old computer, but it's as simple as going into the permissions and adding your current user. Nothing encrypted.

pnj, you can just buy any SATA-to-USB adapter or enclosure (assuming it's a SATA drive).

Its a old POS bargain consumer laptop, most people don't enable encrypted file system.

Also the laptop screen should have a flat cable - you aren't confusing it with the VGA or HDMI port? Also since it has one or two external display ports, plug a HDTV or monitor in and then turn on the computer. If those don't come on try toggling the display output mode using the fn+whatever it is to toggle the display output mode.

when I plugged the lappy into a work monitor, the monitor instantly display 'auto detect, analog output. power save setting...' (or something along those lines)

so maybe it's not booting up? there is power to the fan/keyboard lights but I can't tell if the HD is spinning because the fan is fairly loud.

Try toggling the display mode via the keyboard as I mentioned. I looked it up and its fn+F4 to toggle the display modes via the keyboard.

Did you physically reconnect all the connectors? A connector may look connected when it actually isn't. I would open up the laptop again and disconnect and reconnect every connector you touched.

Do any of your power lights, hard drive light, or any other lights on you laptop come on when you try to boot?

Enter the BIOS and turn all that power saving stuff off with the work monitor plugged in?

Go to a computer repair place with your tail between your legs.

If you can't get it working and you have a desktop you could possibly get an adaptor to slot an extra drive in, would make transferring all your porn much quicker.

I have reconnected the connections many times. I have to belive they are as connected as they can be. The HD doesn't have a light, that I can see but other lights on the keyboard turn on.

The wireless connection light shows it is not connected to the wireless network and it usually connects (or turns blue) within minutes of booting the cvntputer. but other lights on the keyboard do turn on.

syadasti - I purchased that usb drive adapter (ordered from amazon yesterday, received it yesterday :) ) but my desktop doesn't display the drive.. could be that I'm on win7 and this adapter may not work w/ win7.

Is it possible that I fried something on one of the boards? I'm fairly cautious with electronic stuff but this one has me puzzled.

Check the instructions for that adapter, some require the included powersupply for all drives and some can just work off USB power as long as your desktop has powered USB ports. Obviously if its power from the USB port the drive won't turn on/spin up til you plug it in. If you are using it right and it won't turn on then your HDD is probably dead. Laptop HDDs are probably the most common laptop failures.

The adapter will just show up plug and play as a USB mass storage device, you don't need a driver for most OS anymore.

so, I got it to work/be visible in windows explorer but there are no files..

I get an HP folder and a Recovery folder but that's it. Nothing is in the HP folder and only 2-3 text files in the Recovery folder. wtf...

Make sure you are opening the right drive letter - the drive may have various partitions and drive letters (probably at least 2-3 partitions). Disk recovery is more complicated, there are various free and paid applications available though. You could look in disk management in windows and see what partitions are on there.

google says my issue may be the drive names. I'm on a work cvntputer and there are a number of different network drives. google says those drives may interfere (or the drive names..?) with me viewing the files on my HHD.

I do have another lappy at home I can check this with. but it's another HP laptop so the drive names will probably be the same.. :/

You won't have a ton of network drives so I think you might be OK.

Windows disk management (right click on computer and choose manage) will show you the status of drives on your system but if its a work computer you might not have access to that.

ok, it comes up as H: drive on the laptop at my house. (not teh same laptop that won't turn on.)

How do I find the desktop folder? I don't see it in the windows folder. I'm just seeing the contents of my C: drive....

couple thoughts:
- if you think/expect your laptop autoconnects to wireless, log onto router from different machine & monitor sessions. if yours shows up, obviously things are ok there
- if not above, consider a bad IDE controller on your disk (not very many options at this point)

it's dead, jim.

I haven't played with it since I was last on here asking cause I got frustrated with it. But, my main issue was the lappy over heating, which it still does so it's dead to me.

meh.

maybe I'll look back into getting it working at a later date but for now i'm done taking it apart/putting it together.

I will need a new machine but I don't really want win8. I need something that I can run visual studio on so I don't think i can go w/ some other OS...
