Tool for King cones?

This is kinda a small, fiddly question, but I can't figure it out, so I'll ask.

Front King hub (QR, disc, FWIW). I want to fiddle with the front bearings OK, so I stick a 5mm in each end, and haul on it a little bit. On one side, the outer bit (the bit that touches the dropout) comes undone, but I can't get the cone (the bit next to it) to come undone. It's got those nice relieved holes in it, but I can't seem to find a pin spanner that will actually fit.

Before I booger up the hub with a pair of vice grips, any suggestions?

King does make a special tool for fitting that, but usually you can get away with a pair of needle nose. It should turn very easily and doesn't need to be to tight. Once you loosen the 5mm bolts, just tighten the adjuster down finger tight and snug up the 5mm's and you should be set.

If you check kings website I believe they have videos showing this excat process.

Hm. Yeah. This one is rather more than finger tight -- might have something to do with the axle's general tendency not to spin. I'll see if I can find a set of pliers that will fit the tooling...

Thanks...

If it's that tight I would try and track down the proper tool at a bike shop. That aluminum does scratch pretty easily if you care about the look of the hubs.

Take the axle all teh way apart. Unthread the adjusting ring and grease the threads. Re-assemble the axle and re-adjust the preload on the bearings. Sounds like the adjusting ring has gotten a little corrosion in there and seized a bit. Shouldn't be a big problem once you've removed the axle from the hub. King sells the whole toolkit on their site which includes the adjuster, the bearing installation/removal tools and a swank manual for all their gear.
