I remember way back when, the amateur scene used to be rockin with SUPER FAST KIDS! Now, they're all pros & the amateur scene has kinda lost it's flavor.....especially since Sanjay has moved up to semipro...& now pro! Riffle, Codding, Bailey, Houseman, Strait, Gustafson, Zink, Warren, they've all been there & done it.

So, Who's the new blood??

I'm looking to find out who the next mtb star is. The guys that have great potential to win a National race in the amateur class. Any age category, any class, but preferably in DH or MTNX/4X. It'd be great if they had some personality too!

I'm using this info seriously. I'm passing it along to a company I just started working with (unofficially at the moment).

Please PM me w/ names & contact info (email or phone), & if you know their class/age category

Please don't email me, I'm so swamped w/ emails that I might not be able to respond to yours, or it might be accidentally deleted.

**NOTE** This in now way pertains to my business Dylan Dean Designs. sorry.

Why... me of course! My name's Phil Wheeler and I am a crazy badass. Next year I plan to win every Expert 19-24 race by at least 30 seconds.... Actaully I'm lying, Im going semi pro, and that is why there arent really any awesome riders in expert except for juniors, because once you start winning in expert you get the hell out and go semi pro so as nto to be a sandbagger and to avoid the disneyland style lines in practice and have to pass 4 people during your race run. But you can still give me stuff, right?

Yea that basically seems to be how it goes. After 1 good season in expert most people (including myself) move up to semi-pro. If we didnt we would be labeled sandbaggers and probably wouldnt get much faster.

Garrick Anderson is the name and PRO racing is his game. He actually raced pro at the nat. champs and beat lopes...11th i think..first pro race.

Most of the fast kids in JR X moved up this past year. #1 points junior Kyle Adams is a Ripper..2nd at nat. champs. junior worlds next year.

Another kid to keep an eye on is travis Bond or Nate Lewis. both have another year left in Jr. X and are already kwik as hell.

Word.
I just started racing last season, and this was my first full one. Ive already heard the "SB" word thrown at me a bit so am looking to move up to semi next year (hopefully). There isnt much time for the new up and comer guys to be 'up and coming' in the expert categories, because by the time theyve come their already gone!

Marc Sullivan is a super fast kid that hardly anyone knows even around here. He's still got another year he could race JR X, i hope he does next year and gives the worlds a shot.
Avery Buch is pinner fo sho (when he can stay on bike ;) , but also already racing semi-pro
Nik Patalano is only 15 and will be going into this 3rd year racing (and will still be Jr X next year), by the time he's 18 he should be absolutley killing it.

# 1...ryan is no longer amatuer...# 2 he is no longer a space monkey..# 3. a christmas present would be the last thing to expect from that kid. PM me for the finer points of our former friendship.

Also forgot to add JD Swanagen to the list of up and comers...hes got 2 years left in JR X and is already fast as ****. Get him a haircut and an attitude adjuster(damn socal gromets) and he could do OK.

J.D is very fast and smooth, the Andersons have awesome style and a clean riding technique, I'm stoked to be able to ride with them from time to time......Ryan is suuuuper fast, I'm scared. As for me, I'm washed up. I'm too old to make it (19), but I'll try my luck in the semi pro division

Tim Price of Great Falls, VA. He's 15, got 2nd in Durango JuniorX DH, 6th at Mammoth. He's ranked 5th in the US in JuniorX. Watch this kid at the Junior Worlds next year.

Watch out for Sam Teasdale. This kid in on my team and at only 14 he is a serious ripper. He just started racing this year, jumped right up to Jr. X and was placing mid pack not even on a downhill bike. Piper you race him at one of the Tenney races in four cross, he was going way to big off of the jumps on my bike and seriously ripping it. Also those who may know him may think he is a joke, but I think Mr. Conor Lockwood at only 12 has some serious potential. If he dropped a few pounds and really got serious he could really get fast, he is the most enthusiastic person about biking in the world, and is definitely talented. I myself am making the jump to Semi-Pro from Jr. X next year so that I can get my ass kicked. good times.

The man speaks of Josh Toland (4th in DH @ mammoth)((blue heckler)) and Greg Watts (NCS Mtn. X overall winner)((white heckler)). greg and josh also have mad DJ skills. you may remember Gregs video from the 2004 UFC competition.

Id have to agree on the Tim Price kid...i forgot he was only 15. hes gonna be dangerous next year.

The Lazian (TJ Sharp), The Weasel (Brendan Newton), and TIMMAYY Price are all the shiznit. I would like to thank Brendan for teaching me how to corner at snowmass, it was clutch. Timmy as well deserves some credit for showing me a thing or two about riding in the mud, a lesson with which I promptly went out and completely blew WV and VT, I suppose there's no teaching some people. Have fun in expert practice next year, young-uns.

Ok,

Derek Cowell he just turned I beleive 16 so he has time left in Jr expert. Technically speaking he qualified for worlds this year but lost his spot because Canada had to bring a kid from Quebec.

Derek is a ripper and travels alot he was all around Canada this year with some super high finishes ranging from top 5 to a first place out in BC. The kid is fast he rides with Canada's racing phenom Justin"jus" Brown who I think minus bad bike set up at worlds this year would have made some people on the podium upset, qualified 13 when he was throwing whips suicide no handers and skidding into to corners to make roost.

Anyways Derek kids like a son and brother to me and just to let you know with the coaching he has now and the support from friends and family he will be top 5 at worlds next year.

I'm throwing Travis Bond out there. Kid is physically designed for DH. Tall, strong, placed 3rd behind Herndon at Windrock...no easy feat on that super tech course. Plus, most of the year he was stuck on a crappo, CRAPPO, CRAP Tomac DH bike that was beaten!

Seriously, check the kid out. 4th JuniorX at Durango, 5th DH at Snowmass..both once he ditched the Tomac and got a Chumba! All you gotta do is meet him once...

Piper and Jade hit most of the eastcoast rippers, but there is a whole crop of 13-14 year olds out there that are absolutely nuts. Almost any kid with a half decent bmx background and a pretty crapy bike can get insanely fast with a little bit of coaching. If you take the top 3 kids from the Junior open class (12-14 beginner and sport basically) and put them on good bikes, and let them develop for another year, they are going to absolutely kill everyone in Junior X. Geoff Ulmer, from Troy, and my boy Converse from right here in Northampton already have semi-pro or pro level skills. They are at an age that is phenonemal for aquiring skills. Once their engines catch up with their skills, if, and this is a big if, they decided to stick with the sport, they will put everyone on the east coast to shame. I'm seriously spending all winter at the indoor bmx track meeting the rippers and trying to hook them up with bikes. Why anyone would leave the NBL (OLYMPICS, PRIZE MONEY), to race mtb's anymore is beyond me, but I know in my heart of hearts that MTB racing is the best sport in the world, and if i can get 3 rippers on the national scene, i feel like maybe I will have made it full circle in this sport....

Marc is ridiculously fast, Hes one of the kids that was having top 5 pro times at Plattekill when he was a jr x. Super nice kid but unfortunately had alot of bike problems this year.
Avery is my teamate and a really talented young Semi Pro. If he trained or even rode his bike when not actually racing and put some meat on his bones hed be damn quick.

I agree on Geoff, that kids going to have some skills one day! Ive seen him ride the past 2 or 3 seasons and hes super quick for his age. With a good bike and some experience he is going to be someone to look out for in the not too distant future. I dont know the other kid unfortunately though.

Ive seen those kids ride and I was impressed. They are rippers for sure and could deffinately be a force in '05

Theres a couple other kids that are super young from all over the country that have allready had real good pro results, some were allready listed some werent. One that comes to mind is Luke Strobel. Thats all I can think of for now.

Actually hes a pro and a really fast one at that. But If hes got another year in Junior (I think he might?) then he will be racing amature at the first couple nationals in order to qualify for worlds.

What is the cut-off for juniors. I think he is 19 or 20.

And I know how fast he is. I raced locally with him and spent my time trying to follow his line.

not to take anything away from cyrus, cause he rules... but at least get your facts straight. He couldn't have had 2nd and 3rd on the east coasts, i took 2nd at both of them... i think it was more like 4th and 3rd or 5th and 3rd.

Luc is a really cool kid and a fast one at that. it seems like everyone made the huge deal out of Duncan and Henry Racing pro this season but from what i know strobel went right from starting in junior X to Pro in the same season and still competing. That is pretty damn fast.

and as for the cut off. you can be 18 up until 12/31/of the previous racing year.

EX.. birthday of 11/30/86 would put you as 19 for the 2005 season and no longer a junior.
