top clamp placement question

I have a Bullit with a 7" Monster T. The top clamp that was delivered with the fork didn't have enough drop to grab the fork tubes when at the top of the headset, so it was replaced with a clamp that would leave about 1/2" of the tubes above it--both Marz factory pieces.

My question is this: should I run the top clamp with the bottom edge at the headset (with fork tubes above the clamp), or the top edge at the top of the fork tubes (with spacers above the headset)? The latter option seems to me like a bigger lever working the headtube off; the former I'm having trouble picturing the physics of.

What do you think? Should I just split the difference? My bars are most comfortable 1.5" above the headset.

It doesn't matter. You can put the top clamp so it grabs the tubes wherever you want (within reason, that is -- some stanchion tubes are milled down so you can't put the top crown TOO low). The top crown does not have to be at the top edge of the stanchion tubes.

1/2" should be fine. However, the farther apart you place the crowns, the stiffer and stronger you whole setup will be. My BB7 has a rediculously short HT and I have about 1" of spacers between my headset and top crown. It could also be argued that there should be at least a small spacer in there. I think it helps keep the clamping force on the headset even.
