I was looking for a way to fit a different type of suspension design onto my hitch rack
The bikes are held by resting on the top tube and i saw a thing called the top tube rack adapter.

this a link of one of the many different ones that were available
in short are these things reliable and could i trust it to hold out thousands of dollars of bikes on trips over 6 hours in duration

You're probably looking for one of those adapter bars, which attach to the stem area and then the seat.

I would personally ditch that rack and adapter idea. Go get a cheap Swagman or some other brand tray style rack. You'll never have that problem again.
