so not bad. I'd go for the single coat thick option at that price differential. I emailed Certapro as well, but unless they can get a quote out super quick will probably go with this and eat the $1,200 or so in extra costs re insurance payout.

edit: Certapro coming by tomorrow afternoon for their estimate. nice and quick indeed. (and I'm wfh that day anyway.)

Certapro came back with $8,200 all up for the house + fence, same 6 mil paint. but their warranty is 2 years and excludes hail.

thus I'm going with Vivax, paying the premium for the better warranty.

picked out colors with family:

dark blue for house and garage door. white for the trim. (color balance on this Windows desktop I"m on makes it seem a bit green/yellow. it isn't. very pure white with a hint of warmth.) periwinkle front door.

Worked on my bike instead of going riding today. Had to cut away a fair portion of my right crank arm to extract a very stubborn stripped pinch bolt. Lots of sparks but didn’t light anything on fire (and I wore eye protection as is prudent). Replacement crank arm en route now but it’ll probably hold up for a ride with the one remaining bolt. Maybe?

The ol’ bike got a fresh chainring (inadvertently went up 2 teeth but should be ok), chain, and cassette. While I had the rear wheel off I noticed a decent gouge in one chainstay. I’ll see what Pivot has to say about that.

Jeez, how do those bolts strip out? Are they the same as any regular Shimano crank?

They aren't done up too tight.

You've probably already sorted it out, but I had a buddy who once mounted a Shimano cranked, but mismeasured (or had too many beer) and spaced the crank too far out. So it was effectively held on by one bolt and that plastic end cap.

You can probably guess how that turned out It survived most of the ride, but eventually the crank slid off while he was in the air on a dirt jump. Ended up cracking a bone in his foot, if I recall correctly.

fwiw I haven't been using any spacers. not sure if that's right or not . I figure the plastic cap is only to hold it in position so that the pinch bolts can keep it on.

it's the same as any regular Shimano crank except that it's like a left hand one... only with right hand appropriate pedal threads. spider/ring goes on the motor's crankshaft, if you will, with a larger, left hand threaded, splined interface (and its own deep dish socket tool that I had to buy to service it).

only one bolt stripped, for the record. and not even the closer in one that mandates use of the ball head Allen. maybe one time when I put the wrench in there was a tiny rock that made the engagement depth just shallow enough to not stand up to the torque?

Golden Bike Shop mechanic told me unofficially to just keep riding on the damaged chainstay but to keep an eye on it to make sure it’s not expanding. ‘tis 15 mm now.

Mangled by me crankarm didn’t fall off during my ride, which is good. Somehow I managed to strip the first few threads on the apparently fragile XT cassette’s lockring. A spare Deore lockring from my LBS’s parts drawer fixed that right up. And the 36t size was noticeably different but overall it was all fine still.

"We have our dealership training on the ID.Buzz at the beginning of next month. This will be my first time getting hands on with the ID. Buzz! [...] We should get the programs any week now. I will let you know how my training goes, I’m super excited!"

I’m committing: getting the snow tires put on the Busy Forks (instead of on the minivan). If an ID.Buzz transaction doesn’t happen by winter break I might end up having to get the minivan a cheap set of snow tires just to hobble through this ski season.

so I've bitched here before how my wife has an education degree and a masters yet has been working as a teacher's aide in the younger kids' preschool, and how this job seems to sap all excess energy from her (and then some).

well, she laid the groundwork for going to work as a legit full-blown teacher over this summer by taking the Praxis exams. apparently that's all she needed to do, 4 of them, all passed on the first try after some weeks of studying from books. but she said that for logistics and familiarity with this school she wouldn't want to work anywhere but at the kids' elementary.

turns out one of the 1st grade teachers, new this year, hasn't had a great time with it. said 1st grade teacher is thus quitting mid year, effective next month. the principal of the school, aware of my wife's desire to teach elementary there, has reached out to her as their first, internal choice. thus my wife shall be doing a long term sub gig in the 1st grade classroom until winter break, at which time she'll make up her own mind of whether this is something she wants to segue into as the official classroom teacher and all.

this is a positive thing, finally working with the benefit of her actual degrees (which are unrelated to early education in particular but count in the tally), and finally to make more money than the 401(k)/403(b) annual employee contribution limit. which she hasn't been to this point.


update: she decided to jump in with both feet come Nov and just accept it outright. might as well get paid for the real job if the real job is what she's going to do.

Update: turned out to be an interview process required kind of thing. She had her sample lesson taught and formal interview on Monday. Should hear more one way or another re her or the other two interviewees later in the week.

(and I desperately need a new rear tire. but I'm holding out for the Schwalbe radial Shredda to be available.)

who knew 3rd party (aero this time!) crossbars for the Busy Forks had such powers

said 3rd party crossbars arrived. construction actually looks pretty solid (and clearly is designed specifically for the hard points of the bZ roof rail system).

not bad for 2.78 Busy Forks payments, including tax and gratis shipping straight from China. (OEM would have been more like 6.6 such payments thanks to pricey shipping.) tons of bubble wrap and tape used. only minor gripe is documentation talks about T40 bolts but the ones in question look straight 6 mm Allen to my eye, def. not Torx.

being aero and all they hopefully won’t whistle and resonate like those crap round crossbars I tried on the short lived EQB.
