House wiring saga update:

original electricians used 4/0 to connect this feed through panel to that in the basement. This was overkill for 150A—my guess is that since they had a heat pump option they wired all of their builds for possible 200A.

Anyway, this should make 200A simpler/cheaper! the panel itself is rated for 200A so it may actually just prove to be swapping that big ol' breaker. like a < $1k job.

It is really simple

n is the gauge, when bigger than 0, n is negative

preliminary tax work: done.

all wrapped up but for Betterment turning on TurboTax auto-import of 1099-DIV and -B forms on Feb 18, in fact. (and since it's a roboadvisor that does hundreds of transactions on my behalf what with tax loss harvesting and all there's just no feasible way for me to import such data manually.)

anyway, with just sundry income declared but no relevant deductions I was slated to owe the Feds a bit over $36k, and a pittance to the state.

after all deductions (and the CO credit for the Busy Forks lease applied in particular): almost $23k refund from the Feds and a bit shy of $13k back from the state.

would it be better if I came out perfectly even? sure. but with variable house rental income and costs—and this year wasn't cheap on the latter, what with the deck reinforcement, the new hydronic boiler, etc. etc.—this makes accounting around this time of year easier.

which is good given FICA limit season and all anyway…

Friday morning goings-on in my world:

- successfully transplanted the 25' ex-Leviton cable onto the working Autel EVSE

476623704_17896000173115176_4940063047863656785_n.jpg

- put up a 240V garage heater on the aluminum 6 ga second garage circuit. will only run it when not using the EVSE on days when the 120V heat pump in the window can't pump due to low ambient temps. (it's much worse than a mini split in that regard.)

- shipped the burnt Leviton to their QC lab in said garage heater's box, ex the cable, of course

- recycle run for the ginormous fuzzy oversized chair box. saw two dudes way up high in a man lift by Brighton.

- Amazon returns, as I do. two unworn clothing items.

$1,400 to get to 200A. $1k for the 200A breaker job itself (might actually involve the panel being swapped, too? who knows, quote is in writing), $400 to upgrade the ground to #4 wire to match the new service.

$450 more to get that 50A second EVSE circuit re-pulled with copper and a proper EV-rated receptacle.

update: I'm going forward with this at this price, clearly. but parts won't be in for a few weeks--special order from the distributor. so March it shall be.

so as to eke out some value from my AMC+ week trial besides Blood Machines I watched Armageddon

Armageddon-Cockpit.jpg

and that was one profoundly unserious movie through and through, albeit entertaining for what it is. won't be re-watching that one. :D

anyway, the only question remaining is how it ranks in the pantheon as compared to Moonfall. I think it's a better movie than that. but not by much.

this shall be a two quesabirria tacos-for-lunch kind of week

which is cool, except it implies I was on site at least twice. (thrice, even! as tomorrow I'll be across town on-site at another hospital).

9.5% tax and figure $1,500 for registration (CA isn't cheap so this might even be undercalling it). that works out to a cool $2,039/mi in depreciation.

continuing my asteroid movie theme from the quite terrible Armageddon, I watched Deep Impact tonight

and I actually liked it. its critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes are pretty horrible but it was the right kind of cheese for me. music was good, characters were infinitely better than those sketched out by Michael Bay, and its pace didn't even bother me.

that Elijah Wood was like 10 (ok, 16 or 17) was even fine. a pre-Frodo role as weird as that is
