That's terrible. How does that happen?
Here's how:
The driver of the SUV, Edgar Bishop, 65, of 11 Wood Valley Terrace, Rome, was westbound on Shorter Avenue and was trying to turn into the American Legion parking lot when he struck Lewis, police said.

. . . wasn't the course closed off?
Yes - apparantly, he went through the barrier(s) and for some unknown reason, he just HAD to get to the Legion - probably for a cold beer.

I think Mr. Bishop should get the electric chair for that.

After a good beating.

And then some more beating.

Yeah, then flip the switch.

According to a post on the SORBA website (below, from an old post), Georgia recently enacted a law that increases penalties when a car hits a pedestrian or cyclist (and maybe a motorcycle). Its up to a whopping  $500.

**************

Have you ever thought that penalties for those who crash into and injure
bicyclists have been too lenient? Often under current law, penalties are as
meager as $25 fines. Well, Georgia House Bill 1155 provides for enhanced
minimum penalties for right of way violations that lead to collisions that
injure, maim, or kill motorcyclists, bicyclists, or pedestrians. The bill
was initiated by the motorcycling community (in particular, ABATE of
Georgia) and sponsored by Representatives Alan Powell, Bill Cummings, BobbyParham, Bill Hembree, and Stacy Reece. They specifically wanted to include bicyclists and pedestrians in the bill's coverage -- major kudos to them!

HB1155 passed out of the House Motor Vehicle Committee by unanimous vote onTuesday, February 10. It now awaits House Rules Committee action before itcan be put to the floor for a vote. If it passes the House, the bill wouldthen move through the same process in the Georgia Senate. If this bill inits current form is one that you think is a good idea, consider contactingyour representative. If he or she is on the House Rules Committee, that'sall the better. Note that a handwritten letter works best, then a fax, telephone call, or e-mail (in that order).

Want to read HB1155?
Go to:
www.legis.state.ga.us/
and type 1155 in the HB retrieve-the-bill box.
