So my company develops mobile ad frameworks for iOS and Android devices. As such, I have a few fun toys and will be getting many more as time goes on.

Currently I have the standard fare. Galaxy Tab 7/10, iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch, Kindle Fire, and will soon be getting a Nexus 7. I have to say the Galaxy Tab 7 is a lot bulkier than I would like compared to the Nexus 7 I tried. I look forward to getting some time with the newer devices. The iPad is pretty nice, but it's too big for my liking, I would rather have my 8" netbook with actual keyboard (80% in size, but still). But the iPod touch is slick.

Keep in mine that I had not so much as touched an Apple iOS device until last week (as I type this on my shiny new MacBook Pro).

Any ideas for cool Android type devices that should be tested?

you just made someones hit list
Yeah that makes sense since I've owned a IIc, Mac Color Classic, Newton 120, Mac Mini G4, iMac G5, iPod 5.5G, iPod Nano 2G, and currently own a Macbook Pro 13. Same as JD, I can't tell random end users to f*ck off, its part of the job.

You don't turn away service at your bike shop when someone is using a brand/model that isn't your personal favorite do you?

Which Kindle Fire? The new one?

I liked the looks of that 9" Kindle Fire... decent resolution, a bit smaller than the iPad. I just don't like the closed ecosystem.

Except now that most carriers don't readily offer unlimited data you are paying out of your quota to see content you don't want to see.
So what?

You're consuming free content that is costing someone money to produce, curate and host. Somehow, somewhere, someone has to get paid for that, or the service is going away.

I'm not saying that the ad should consume half the data on the page, but let's be realistic here. Mobile ads should be smaller, lightweight, not consuming a lot of data - but to suggest that it's somehow a burden is massive B.S. You click on any page with an image on it, and you've already eclipsed the amount of bandwidth consumed by the ad. Hell, the framework of most pages is more data than mobile ads, completely discounting the content.

Yes but in US we pay high costs for functionally monopolized service and get below average broadband. People get pissed when every day they are paying more and more for less and everything is over commercialized with less privacy.

Such as with Amazon's devices, you should get a discount if you opt in for ad-supported/tracked services/products. Your time and data plan/hardware/battery is not free and auto opt-in tricks are not acceptable or even legal. Its the same issue as adware/spyware/malware on the desktop only now they are hijacking your mobile device.

The Fire I have now is the first gen. I should have the Fire HD or whatever this week with the new jailbroke iPhone.

The ads we run are self promotion mostly. If you've ever seen a game that had a button on the menu screen that says "more games" that takes you to a page of more games by the same publisher, they likely used our framework to add that to an existing game without having to change the game itself.

Porn would be entertaining...

so it's spam?
I guess you can call it that. You download and install a game on a phone (not you, but someone who has a smartphone) from a publisher like Glu. They make other games that you may or may not give 2 shi!ts about. Our framework allows the gam publisher to cross-promote games within existing games, or partner with another publisher to promote their games from yours.

You can also use the framework to offer promos, rewards, discounts on virtual crap you might want in the game, or rewards or specials if they download and install other games. It's common practice, our framework just makes it easy since you don't have to mod the game itself to use it.

The Kindle Fire seems less bulky than the Galaxy Tab even though they are damn near identical overall shape/size. The Fire just feels better, but what a pain in the ass to charge.

The .5A off the USB port isn't enough to charge AND run a Kindle Fire. You either need to charge it via wall mount charger, or give it about 9 hours on USB with the device OFF. The closed ecosystem is a joke, but easy enough to get around.

If you are using some random USB data cable the pin layout will cause most devices to only pull .5A. If you go to an ATT store or Amazon you can buy a charge-only cable or make one yourself:

The trade-off is that slower charging/lower amps will extend battery life.

3rd gen iPod, Note, Tab, Fire, and iPad.

I like the Note, but the Nexus 7 (or a rooted fire) are about the only thing that would replace my netbook. I don't like the Tab.

The Galaxy Tab is nearly identical in size to the fire, but feels bulkier in my hands for some reason. I would say for someone not looking to mod it or upgrade the OS, the Tab would be a solid option especially for the price.

If I didn't have the Fire and had not played with the Nexus 7, I might not think it was so bulky.

Have you tried out the GPS on the Tab? Any good?

No, the only one I have taken outside the office has been the Note I played with on the bus ride home. This is the original Galaxy Tab, not the Tab 2 IIRC. But I will check it out tonight and see what's up. If it's the same or better than my S1, that it should be enough to not need a sand alone GPS.

Well, with WiFi enabled it went straight to my current location within a couple yards. Says current location is "accurate to 50 meters" and seems about right.

Ah, didn't realize it was not a Tab 2. The Tab 2 has real GPS in it so you should be able to get pinpoint location.

OK, I will openly and honestly say this:

The iPhone 5 has a very nice form factor. If I could get it with Android OS and Android controls, I would actually pay good money for this. Not a fan of the single button, can't kill must background then kill app action. But it's a nice form factor.

Smaller screens also net you longer battery life and a less vulnerability to falls given similar spec glass (gorilla 2 this time) but its a trade-off. Its obvious they learned their lesson with the flawed 4 series which was among the worst to hit the market/ground for breakage and the 4 had the flawed antenna design:

http://www.cultofmac.com/190499/why-apple-is-killing-off-the-bumper-and-why-you-wont-need-a-case-for-your-iphone-5/

You have to jailbreak it to do even basic things like changing the default browser let alone apps to kill processes.

It's only slightly longer than the iPod Touch and the screen is damn near the exact same size as my Galaxy S1 with less overall bulk.

I have dropped my S1 4 solid times, once while on a call, the back came off, the battery stayed in and the call didn't drop. I worry about dropping my phone and killing it, but the iPone 5 with the Karas Kustoms case would be impressive (if it were not an Apple product).

just got the fire HD, and have to say it's easy to use, except for the power button & volume rockers. i get not wanting to accidentally push them, but when i have to turn on a light b/c i can't even feel them? might want to open up your consumer base to more than just safe crackers
