Trader Joe's will stop offering some Chinese-grown food products because of customer concerns about safety, the store chain announced Monday.

Garlic, frozen organic spinach and other "single ingredient" food items from mainland China will be phased out by April 1, although products that include ingredients from both China and other sources will remain.

The company believes the foods are safe but "we will continue to source products from other regions until our customers feel as confident as we do about the quality and safety of Chinese products," Trader Joe spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki said in a statement.

Mochizuki did not indicate how long the products would be off the shelves or how many items were affected.

China's exports have come under intense scrutiny in the past year after lead or dangerous chemicals were found in goods ranging from dog food to toys and toothpaste.

But Trader Joe's, which offers a variety of organic, gourmet and imported foods in nearly 300 U.S. stores, went further than some other chains.

Wegmans, which has about 70 stores in five Eastern states, stopped purchasing Chinese-grown garlic last fall but continued to sell other produce.

"We have not made any sweeping decisions to eliminate any product lines because of them being sourced from China," spokeswoman Jeanne Colleluori said.

"It was our responsibility to work with good suppliers, and there are good suppliers in every country — and there are not-so-good suppliers."

Representatives of Whole Foods Market Inc., Kroger Co. and Safeway Inc. did not immediately return calls seeking information on their product lines.
For those who could not get to the linky...

My wife is on a "nothing from China, it's all crap" campaign at the moment. I kind of roll my eyes as practically all Japanese culture descends from China. She also refuses to buy the American steaks the supermarket sells because she doesn't want to "get mad cow disease"...Me asking "how could we tell if you did" got me a slap.

I suppose but in the sense that a Porsche is superior to a Toyota. Plus there has been reports of mad cow in Japanese cattle too. No reasoning with her I tell ya. I generally only eat Australian beef anyway. Even my missus grudgingly admits it's pretty tasty and disease free.

It turned out that a bunch of that China/poison stuff was made up by the media anyway. The problem has been blown out of proportion (shocker) by the media.

Also VB, remember to point out to your wife that like 40 people have got CJD ever, and most of them worked in meat processing plants where they bathed in splattered cow's brain daily. You're considerably more likely to be hit by lightening.

I could tell her that until I'm blue in the face, won't make any difference.
Not that the Americans have done themselves any favours over this though. When beef shipments resumed after the original ban, in the first shipment, the very first, the Japanese inspected it and they found brain stem material.:disgust1::disgust1: Ban, ban, ban for another 12-18 months or whatever it was.:imstupid:

It really is good. I'm not just saying that.

Things NZ does well:

Beef, Lamb, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Milk and certain cheeses, Rugby, Schooling, social cohesion, 3rd party liability.

Things NZ does badly:

Home heating, nuclear power, stopping whaling protests, fiscal policy.

In my countrys defense against this pommie upstart!.......

Yes we suck at nukes.........Bloody awful at them! which is why we shouldn't be trusted with them ;)
ps we also don't need them. :pirate2:

Meh if some aussies et al want to go go kill themselves down there. GO FOR IT!!!!
and if they by chance also happen to kill off a few whalers, no biggy. :D

Quite happy with Cullens fiscal policy (intrest rates hurt at the mo but it was nessesary to slow the housing market and it is working).
Cullens economic stabilizer policy is likewise working well, all those multi billion dollar surpluses that the government has had, are now getting used to keep the economy sweet now that we are looking like being on the receiving end of an overseas recession. and that will see us thru till the next upward part of the world economic cycle. :)

Yeah no comeback with the home heating though. :(
But that said, my place is pretty good..... average power bill for the house with 3 adults over winter was $110-$115 per month. And my house is pretty warm. :D

We could do with nuclear power, but the population has been brainwashed, and is generally convinced it is the root of all evil...

It's more than working! He's overcooked it IMO.

Nah, they're gonna give them away in tax cuts. :busted:

Mind you, I'll be voting for whoever promises me the biggest cut! :pirate2:

And maybe we can get rid of the retarded smacking legislation too!

I got me some heat pumps, working out pretty good. Now I just need double glazing to save me in a southerly.

Double glazing is a great idea, got it on my house, the heating/cooling issue aside, it's worth it for cutting out the noise.
BTW, I hope you two appreciate the self-restraint I'm showing not posting about the good and bad of en-zed.:twitch:;)

Been looking at doing double glazing at my place...... That glass looking over cook strait gets pretty cold in a winter southerly (plus the noise factor) but at the mo it's just too bloody expensive. :(

And we will refrain from pointing out the honest home truths about Ostralya mate! ;) :D
All right, all right, since we've been saying sorry this week I guess I better do a few "mea culpas" to the rest of the world as well on behalf of my country...
1) Fosters- this is a joke that went really wrong. We didn't actually think you'd drink it.
2) Air Supply- we had to get rid of them somehow but foisting them on the rest of the world was just plain mean
3) Every movie Paul Hogan made after Crocodile Dundee- we shouldn't have encouraged him.
4) Rupert Murdoch- the Australian robotics industry has a lot to answer for.:disgust1:

One cow looks at another and says, "Hey, you heard about this new mad cow disease?" The other says, "How could I? I'm a tractor."
