There are two upcoming trail maintenance events in Los Penasquitos, and I'm gonna tell you why you should both care, and come out to help. Stick with me, even if you're not a regular Los Pen rider:
--Los Pen is exactly where the anti-mtb forces in San Diego had their first organized assaults on mtb-access and where the anti-mtb policies around SD all trace their roots to.
--the SDMBA and the MTC have made huge strides toward undoing the work of the bike-haters and have used trail maintenance events and advocacy to already get official multiuse status on both Upper and Lower Cobblestone trail(s). The January 8th trail maintenance day was HUGE to the Rangers.
--The SD Senior Ranger is not only in charge of developing trail policies CITY WIDE, but happens to be the Los Pen Ranger, too. This guy and his superiors are the ones that opened up much of Mission Trails to bikes and now want to "showcase" Los Pen as a place that proves MTB's belong on what we currently call "singletracks".
--The showcasing takes place on June 5th, because "National Trails Day" events by the City and County are at Los Pen. In addition to a massive equestrian Poker Ride, the SDMBA and MTC are putting on MTB rides, and the newly opened trails will be used.
--There's still work to be done on the trails, and it's been the MTB community that has done most of the work so far. A few hours of your time (which winds up being fun, by the way) will let you meet other riders while repairing trails and cementing-in the "stakeholder" status of bike riders in Los Pen, and elsewhere in the City and County.
--SDMBA gives stuff away at the big events. Free Scwhag, did I mention that?
--There are two pending events. The BIG ONE is May 15th, 8am-Noon. We'll go back to Cobblestone Trail(s) and make repairs to the rutted areas below the major work done on January 8th. The small one is May 1st, this Saturday. See below.
