How would I begin to touble shoot USB problems on a laptop? We've got a Dell inspriron ( XP) and flash drives and mice are causing all sorts of freezes etc.

I have not isolated whether it's only certain of the ports or not, and I'm not sure if that matters.

any pointers appreciated.

You should see if you can isolate the ports because that probably means it's electrical/physical instead of software. If that's the case, you can just not use those ports.

Otherwise, go into your Device Manager, expand your USB section and delete all of the Root Hubs. Let Windows reinstall them. Might fix the problem.
