My rear brake lever keeps coming loose and moving way far out - so far out that it is difficult to reach........when cleaning and working on my chain with the bike upside down the little ball even came out of it's socket......I put it back in, but it seems like this is going to keep giving me trouble.

It looks like it takes a 2mm allen wrench to tighten things up - but it doesn't seem to do much or stay tight.

Any suggestions - or do I need new parts from Hayes?

Thanks!

If the ball is coming out it means the retaining washer is blown out. There is a washer that goes around the shaft above the ball and is held in place with a circlip just inside the lever body. You need a new washer but you can remove the old one, flatten it back out and put it back in as a temporary measure. You'll need a pair of circlip pliers with a long needle nose to do this.

This design is supposed to keep your lever from bending in a crash.

The 2mm hex is the lever reach adjustment. If you unscrew it all the way from the lever and swing the lever out of the way you will get a clearer view inside.

To Brian: Hope's have this same washer design. Smartass! :D
