I'm running a Mavic tubeless setup on 2.5's and need minor maintenance. Do I absolutely have to remove the tire or can the the mechanic simply deflate and work his magic?
L'oopie is correct. Tires off for a shop job that is true & round with no flat spots.
Truing by eye with the tire on should only be done on the fly the keep you rolling after a smash up.
If you have decent rims that you would like to keep serviceable for a few years, take the tires off. If you really don't care and routinely sell your cast offs on eBay...
if you have a decent truing stand you can leave the tire on, otherwise if you are half decent with a wrecnh you can do just as good with the tire mounted.
If you've had a little practice, you can get round pretty much dead on with the tire still mounted, given that it didn't totally suck to begin with. Lateral true is no problem at all with the tire on.
