I'm running a Mavic tubeless setup on 2.5's and need minor maintenance. Do I absolutely have to remove the tire or can the the mechanic simply deflate and work his magic?

I suck, so my advice my not be appropriate, but I too "true" with tire on.

However, I don't think you can adjust roundness with tire on and that seems to be just as important as true.

I do an 'ok' job doing it myself since I've my own stand. I was just wondering how the pros do it.

L'oopie is correct. Tires off for a shop job that is true & round with no flat spots.

Truing by eye with the tire on should only be done on the fly the keep you rolling after a smash up.

If you have decent rims that you would like to keep serviceable for a few years, take the tires off. If you really don't care and routinely sell your cast offs on eBay... :)

If you've had a little practice, you can get round pretty much dead on with the tire still mounted, given that it didn't totally suck to begin with. Lateral true is no problem at all with the tire on.
