We all know that many or most of these supporters are semi nuts. But not all of them. I personally know people who I used to respect, who are intelligent and WERE capable of critical thinking, who got wrapped up in Trump, qanon, conspiracies etc. They believe it, REALLY believe it.

Has anyone published anything worth reading about the mass brain washing of 100M people?
How could this have been SO fucking effective? Obviously social media plays a big role, giving a megaphone to any idiot that wants one. But this is hard for me to understand, and I'm not even the dumbest person on ridemonkey!

For cereal though, if anyone comes across good articles on the mental warfare angle of this, post 'em up.

not quite what you’re looking for, but semi related to how it has happened before in this country on a smaller scale. Human nature.

If the trump presidency taught me anything, it’s that some people got the message when they read The Sneetches, while others just thought getting star tattoos would be cool.

It's funny that the 2nd doesn't negate the 1st for you. Maybe you were just wrong. I've learned I was wrong about some folks lately. But I'm not clinging to the idea that they're competent thinkers because that was my assumption at one point, and the evidence very obviously proves otherwise

Like everything with this cult the people spewing "do you own research" are the least capable of actually doing research.

You want articles or books? There are TONS of books on cults, especially after the american 70s with moonies, manson, the jim jones kool aid krew, then the davidians........

It's just time in the tunnel. Fox news took off in the 90's with clinton and piggybacked on what rush limbaugh had been doing on the radio. There are a lot of people in their 30s now who have NEVER known what real broadcast news or real reporting is. It's literally an entirely divergent reality. And people like brian who are so brainwashed to protect their (his wife's) money that they willingly ignore information and just think anyone who disagrees with them "just watches CNN" because that's all he 'sees'.

The truth is, we need to clamp down on what passes as news. It's about to get way worse with newsmax, epoch times, oan and the ilk....

How would you suggest approaching such a clampdown?
Through FCC licensing. Fox news has specifically evaded responsibility for telling the truth multiple times. The oldest being the late 90s when a court deemed them entertainment. The latest being tucker carlson's (for some reason successful) argument being that no one in their right mind would think this is real.

That's all fine and good but you don't get to use the word News in your name. TV networks are already highly regulated (cursing, cigarette ads etc) because the medium has been around longer. It's entirely possible to do this online too. It happens with child porn and ISIS content but nobody notices it.

For the real world (online) you make the check point at the web hosts; dreamhost, godaddy etc. That way violations have a real threat of getting pulled, with the host taking some responsibility.

This isn't revolutionary, it's been proposed for years. It just always gets shot down by the donors and politicians who benefit from the bullshit.

Also......make lying in congress a crime. You lie, you lose your vote. You continue to lie, you lose your seat. That stops the limbaugh to floor cycle of bullshit that just created this.

Yea, maybe I was wrong, I do believe that they were 'different' before all this (although clearly susceptible to influence in hindsight). But, I don't think I was wrong about ALL of them. That's what I'm thinking on; how people could be swayed by what seems like such unbelievable shit.

This is a large part of why I quit FB a couple years back. Turned out an uncomfortable number (any # greater than zero) of people I thought I knew, liked, and appreciated, were way too fascist-adjacent for my liking. It's one thing to have differences of opinion. it's quite another to go full authoritarian because the last president had the temerity to be a couple shades too dark. Was a real wake up call for me and remains an uncomfortable reminder that I may not be the greatest judge of character. You think you know someone........

I've been to enough shows to have witnessed first hand just how far overboard some people go with drugs. Never witnessed someone so high they did sedition tho.

.........until now

It should shock no one that the same people who rant your face off about "government weed" and the deep spirituality of some of the worst doodle music nursery ryhmes in history...... are also susceptible to dumb ass conspiracy theories of a different brand.

Early last year I started blocking some of my hippie friends on various platforms who started posting Quidiot shit.

I dropped a bunch of high school "friends" yesterday because I am just blown away. I get being mad that you lost, but to see Wednesday as a revolution and things to come is too much.

I haven't dropped my sister and BIL, but it's close. Not only is she the only one to have never traveled, she married a prison guard who swears he isn't racist.

old story but I'll go ahead and bring up what annoyed me about it.

It's like people forgot the video footage they watched. That wasn't one dude.........that (along with kenosha) was one of the few instances where that community blew the fuck up and hundreds of people fucking destroyed that machismo temple of violence and bullshit.

Blaming it on one dude severely discredits one of the most awesome and inspiring community responses to violence and racism this country has seen in modern history.

One of the incredible layers in irony in all of this is that if these fuckers were wearing masks per Covid protocols they wouldn't be very easy to identify.
Jackasses have been getting into cars in our hood and nobody can ID anybody on camera because they all have masks on.
