I don't think I have issues with cash bail, just that it has to be scalar to an individual's ability to pay it. You have a net worth of $1mm and make $200k/yr? Your bail should be 10x someone who has $100k and makes $20k. Of course adjusted more appropriately based on day-day impact of those expenses.

It should also be scaled more appropriately based on the crime and flight risk. Terrorism, murder, financial crimes with high flight risk? Jack that way up or keep them in jail. Drug charges, things that are insubstantial but staying in prison will destroy and individual's ability to continue their life (ie working), no need for bail or staying in jail; just make a no show a massive multiplier.

Your response is exactly why it needs to be ended

Flight risk and threat are already considerations. But you end up with someone named kyle who shot 3 people, killed 2 of them and then just made 2M bail because america is a hateful racist place. And most of the money is concentrated deep within the realm of that hate and racism. The 2M was supposed to be 'proportional' and even got doubled at one point. Tying bail to an amount is just dumb and doesn't work the way it's supposed to. Especially with predatory bail bond businesses......

If people are dangerous don't give them bail or keep them under house arrest. It seriously serves no purpose whatsoever but to fuck over poor people. Cash bail is step one in sending already struggling people down a financial death spiral, often for crimes they never comitted but were told to plead guilty to because a public defender is too busy.

Just like policing in general, you don't ask the people who have never been in the system how to fix it. They created the problem.

All. Of. This.

Remember the guy arrested two days ago in DC with a fake security badge, a gun and 500 rounds of ammo?

Released

A judge ordered him released on personal recognizance and issued a stay-away order from the District of Columbia.

So here you have someone likely testing out security at the capital city, a week and a half after an attempted insurrection, with lots and lots of chatter about the next three days and violence, way more firepower than 'personal protection' would dictate.........and released.

The problem is not a sufficient amount of 'cash bail'. The problem is two completely disparate justice systems. Eliminating cash bail is legit because it's been abused, horrendously applied in an unequal manner, and again, doesn't actually accomplish anything meaningful other than keep poor people properly disposed of in the minds of the petty bourgeoisie.

This kinda shit makes me wonder if the wrong group stormed the capitol. Hopefully the left and the #realanarchists are taking notes. Perhaps the sight of Rome burning was worth it...

People in minneapolis literally gutted and burned the police precinct building that housed one of the most demonstrably violent and racist police forces in the US with a catalogued history of both, rare in its depth for even police.

Portland protestors pretty much functionally shut down the federal court building by doing little more than making noise and attacking an overpriced fence night after night.

Real change will come from systematic rebuilding so that's where most of the focus is.

But in the meantime, might as well let yourself enjoy the small things.
