So in prep for my Alaska trip I called the airport desk to make sure the laws haven't changed for transporting firearms.

They now want you there 4 hours early with a metal hard sided lockable case and all ammunition must be in factory boxes and you have to give up the key to the case for inspections at any time, if they cant find you, the firearm doesn't make the plane.

I miss the days of just having to declare a firearm.

they have to be checked at baggage, apparently the firearm needs to be on the same plane as the ticket holder.
why wouldn't you be able to do that?

my former employer would check a dog at cargo and be on the same flight.

Flew to Montana with my Rem 700 out of Phoenix. Same thing, was told to be there 4hrs early. Expect to be under constant surveillance the moment you even approach the terminal. I was greeted by security long before I got close to the check desk. Escorted to the security office where they promptly checked my ammo and weapon. Once everything was kosher, I was politely escorted to the check in desk where the attendant nervously tagged the case and placed the key in an envelope and handed it to the rentacop. Rentacop hand carries the case and ammo into the back. I was informed to make sure to check in with the attendants at the departure gate 30min before boarding. Watched the same rentacop walk out with my weapon case and hand it to the luggage loaders. Envelope with key was then walked up the ramp to the flight attendant and handed to the pilot or copilot as soon as they arrived.

Upon arriving in Montana, there was a rentacop waiting for me at the gate and escorted me to baggage. Went in a special room where they had my weapon, ammo, and personal luggage (which was surprisingly missing my usual yellow ziptie on the zippers). Opened weapon case and inspected ammo. Signed some receipt. Rentacop escorts me to the rentacar shuttle and hands me my key in the envelope and I'm off.

Oddly enough, leaving Montana was much easier. Showed up 4 hours and got "wow, you're here early" from the security guy. Didn't escort me to the check in desk and didn't inspect my weapon/ammo. Didn't get the evil eye again till I got back to Phoenix.

All in all, a little bit of stress, but so long as you let them do their thing you should be fine.

It should be the same as flying outta Phoenix. Since you're only carrying a large pistol case that looks like a fancy shmancy carry on, you probably wouldn't start a panic or even draw too much attention to yourself. Carrying a long gun though... yea, you're the center of attention.

I don't plan on shooting one (tags/fees too expensive) but there has been 4 attacks in the last 2 months in the area I am going to be. I refuse to buried as a steaming heap of bear crap that smells like pepper spray.

I will be floating fishing and hunting for 9 days and making camp along the river as I go. if I down a caribou they will come like a dinner bell

yep, I got tired of packing a slug gun and a mag rifle in a roller case, so much easier with a hand cannon

i once was flying to kentucky from chicago to attend a (pretty big, think superbowl of-) airsoft event. i had my M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (airsoft replica) in a pelican gun case to declare. This was after 9/11 mind you, i thought the TSA handlers were gonna have a heart attack. The TSA baggage checker guy opened the case, and his eyes got super huge and mouth dropped open. he got his supervisor to come over with an airport cop and they also did the same. i had to open the top cover and prove that it wasn't/couldn't chamber any rounds. once they saw the internals their asses depuckered and a few jokes were exchanged.

Seeing as though a few years ago you couldn't even check a cigarette lighter this seems reasonable.

I accidentally flew with three full camping fuel tanks in my backpack three years ago. Crack TSA didn't catch it. I even found one of those "we searched your bag" tags inside the pack.

you are out of your mind. you cannot ship firearms without a dealer on both ends and it will cost you a fee at both ends. and it will all be done at the two dealers pace, not yours
is there a bare minimum that below which it's not considered a gun? so if you take it completely apart & make 3 separate shipments...see where i'm going w/ this? costs may be prohibitive, but shop around...? yes?

it doesn't cost a dime to fly it, its just a pain in the ass, shipping it would be a nightmare. I have to take a 1 hr float plane trip to my final destination....see where I'm going with this?

get a type 8 FFL? i'm sure it's just a few online classes & filing fees that you can have waived as a disabled vet.
