Just rode this guys yeti asx on a homemade tubeless system. So nice, @ 35 psi they feel like their at 20. I plan on doing it myself.

I want to use 20 inch BMX tubes as a rim strip, but dont want to use stans cus i dont have 20 bucks. What is the formula for the homeade rim solution. I can remember it, i know it contains liquid silicone though.

Here it is.

4 Part liquid latex--(from Tap Plastics...orange can)

1 Part TUBELESS "Slime"--this has the bigger chunks in it than the regular "Slime" available at your local LBS (MSRP=$7.00)

8 Parts water.

.......
if you don't wanna use Slime...its 2:1 Water to Latex

Its a retail chain here in the Bay Area, hobby stores may carry the stuff. Check on line.

The formula will cost more than $20 to make.

wow, is latex that expensive in the states?

for reference i can get 1l (thats a bit more that a quarter gallon i think) for under 5 bucks, tubeless slime for another 5 bucks and that is enough for around over 3l (1 gallon) of formula.

be sure to look for it in places where they sell adhesives, not in hobby shops.

I've got the porn stuff in my xc tires right now. It works better than stans but is more expensive per unit volume I think. I cut a hole in the front tire this past weekend and it smelled like chocolate while it sealed up. I don't think they make one that smells like bacon, but I'm lookin' Mmmmmmm bacon.

You have porn in your tires? Crazy...

I was going to do the homemade tubeless, but it's so much easier just to get Stans and I know it works, rather than spend a bunch of time and effort ( = $ ) trying to get ghetto to work.

Let us know how it goes though!

you can use a 20" bmx tube, put it on the rim, the idea is to have it strech JUST from side to side and have the edge tuck under the bead lock on the rim.
then just make a hole opposite the valve so the air can flow straight through the tube

if you cant get this to work, you can cut the tube up on the outer edge, and just fold it outwards of the rim, then mount the tire, air up, and cut the extra tube.
this last method is pretty ugly but always works, prob is that the "system" makes it a bish to remove tires and normally you have to ditch the rimstrip after you remove the tire, its dead easy to do and pretty much always works though.

are you sure about that?

that would be cool because the homemade stuff is never quite as good as the original, maybe thats one step closer...

or maybe you meant liquid latex?

Glad no one saw me get that hammer out and make a ding in my frame to make it look like I've been riding.
Give yourself more credit than that...We know you put that ding on the bike when you dropped it while trying your pantented cyclocross manuever off the rock on SnS.

I went and got stans, i figured i didnt want to wait that long, but next time im gunna try to home make it. I couldnt find any in town and didnt want to order it, so i got stans instead.

Any way, i did the 20 inch BMX tube, cept i cut it in half to save some weight. Their holding air at 50 psi, then im gunna lower em to 32 in the morning. THIS WAS SO EASY. id recomend it to every one, just dont try it w/o a compressor, or else it might not work. I didnt even use tubeless tires.

I've use the 2:1/water:latex solution and stans.

The 2:1 latex is decent for getting the tires seated.
Its not nearly as good as stans for sealing punctures though.

How much better does the tubless green slime make the getto solution?

When you do the BMX-tube thing, is there a problem with the tires coming off the bead, i.e. do you need a Stan's rim strip for the best results? I wouldn't think so, but you never know...

SCARY

Not long enough
Just thought I'd point out one more time that I invented the "ghetto" tubless system. Not that anybody cares, but I'm sure to secure my place in Mtn bike history.Since it won't be from anything substancial.....Ever notice that Mtn Bike Action has a "Stans"mention about every two and a half pages? What about a "SCARY" mention?........ Oh yeah,I also made it in to the "Plush2" DVD .......in the bonus.........crash.....footage.....Ehh.
