Morning.

Fundraising event for my wife's work went well last night. Chatted with wife's fun co-workers and avoided the annoying ones. Didn't win any raffle items this year though. All in all I'd say it was a good evening.

Mornin' monkeys. Sick kids at home again. Holy jeez, when will the madness end?! I can sympathize with Stihacka...

Question for y'all... I'm looking to take the family for a week or 10 days on vacation to the Maine coast. But I don't know much about it. We're just looking to for somewhere quiet to relax, play on the beach (and if I can scoot away for a couple of hours to ride, well that'd be just swell). I'm not sure which parts of Maine are not overly touristy, but still interesting to visit. I really liked my vacation in Gloucester, Mass a couple of years ago, but it's a bit too "urban" for this trip. Ideally we're looking for a cottage close to the ocean that quiet.... there's gotta be lots of those in Maine I'd imagine! Any pointers would be appreciated. Oh, we're looking to go in June...

Haven't been there in years, but look in the area of the Hermit Island campground outside of Bath:

http://www.hermitisland.com/

Had pretty quiet beaches, good marine life, etc.

Might be late in the game, but you could also shoot for the outer Cape - Wellfleet or Truro. We do a week long stint in WF and it's always a good time - quiet town, can get to bay & ocean beaches without touching any major road, Kettle ponds in between. WF has about 5 bay beaches that are usually very quiet. Might be tough to book at this late in the game, though.

EDIT BONUS: Outer Cape now equipped with a ton of seals & a cadre of great white sharks!

acadia national park is absolutely amazing, but gets crowded during the summer for sure. i've been going the week of labor day (after the holiday). weather is still good, but the crowds drop drastically.

portland is a really cool town up there.

rockland/rockport area is nice as well.

Some stupid woman brought her lapdog into the grocery store here. Cruised right past the manager with it. I asked the manager if animals were allowed in the store and he said it's probably a service animal. I replied that the health dept could find out for sure if it was a service animal and two minutes later she was escorted out of the store, whining and bitching the whole way.

Good news: the van can go 100 miles on empty.
Bad news: the van can NOT go 110 miles on empty.

As Jim Mac noted, the Hermit Island campground is a GEM (we've camped there many times), one of my favorite things to do is order Lobster Dinners down at the camp store (already cooked) and enjoy them while relaxing by campfire & beach sunset. Unfortunately, I dont know of any good MTB riding nearby, we usually bring the kids MTbs and explore the island (it's all dirt roads). Bath Cycle & Ski is on the way and they have lots of local trail knowledge. Hermit Island is mostly tent/popup camping (no motorhomes), and reservations are recommended early! The beaches will be nice in June, but the water will be COLD!

As for the lower Cape (Truro Welffleet Etc), I am a native Cape Codder (grew up in E. Orleans). The Cape has really been too busy for my taste, especially in the last few summers, so, IMO, it is not a getaway that will keep you away from crowds. Also, the closest MTB trails in the lower Cape (from Wellfleet about 45min drive) are in Brewster at Nickerson State Park. Look up Orleans Cycle, they do a weekend ride, and local knowledge goes a LONG way on the trails there. PM me if you have any questions about either one...

If you want great Maine Coast Riding, one of my favorite places to ride was Mount Agamenticus, if you hook up with the local NEMBA group there, they will take you on all the goods.
