'05 DHR is coming any week now......or so I hope. ANyway I also have a DH40 on order. Does anyone have a DHR stack height measurement for me out there? I'll be running a Cane Creek Double XC headset to get as minimal as possible a stack height. THe DH40 has two different settings i can get the crowns either xl or normal....xl being 161 + mm. Can anyone out there tell me if I'm going to need the xl??

Which headset are you getting? The flush one or the standard one? http://www.canecreek.com/site/product/headset/14_xx.html

I have a Double XC (the normal big tall one) on my DHR with 02 monsters and i use the drop crown. When i had dorados i ran the drop crown for them too.

If you are getting the flush one the the short crowns "should" be ok. I'll measure tonight and post tomorrow if no one beats me to it.

Is your DHR a small, medium, or large?
I ordered a DH40 with a drop crown for my large '05 DHR. I think the medium frame would take the flat crown.

Oooooh neato. How long has that thing been around?
Quite awhile. It's the same headset as their other 1.5 HS, but with a different crown race and top cap. The problem is, it says cane creek on it which IMO, makes it a pile of poo. (I've had bad times with mine)

I remember stoney talking about that thing a while back. I didn't care because I'd already found my solution by then I guess. But come on......you've got to admit that when it comes to quality, cane creek has some stickers that are really up there with the best of them.

FSA make a similar zer-stack reducer that's served me well.

i would run the e 13 reducers with the king zero stack headset. A few of the guys that work at my shop have had lots of reliability issues with the double xc

dumb question maybe: How do you measure axle to crown? Do you measure from the axle to the bottom of your steer tube (where the crown race sits)?

That Cane Creek stuff is one of the biggest ripoffs in the bicycle industry IMO.
I have owned two of their headsets and they lasted about 8 months total for both of them. The double xc cost me about 80$ its worth about 8$.........

I think i might try the e13 setup.....i have been very happy with CK but i would like the lower ride height........

yes - with the lower crowns at their lowest possible setting.

nixhexss - with the E13 reducers all you need is the bearings, upper compression ring and proper race. You don't even need to use the dust cap. A CK headset will not work.

if you had the original double XC, there were some that they had to get kinks worked out on. After all they were the very first compnay to produce a 1.5 headset in a very limited market without much time for real world long term testing. Bugs should be expected. I can't speak for them in terms of design.

I can speak in terms of customer service though, which is excellent. Did you call them and ask them to warranty it out either time? And what was your experience in doing so if you did?

You need the E.13 cups, plus Zero Stack or Integrated headset bearings, crown race, and compression ring. If you buy the E.13 cups, and an integrated headset from Cane Creek or FSA, you'll have everything you need.

You can buy the whole kit from Go-Ride.com

Was too fed up Butch. Just put a CK in and my bike steered 11% better and forgot about headset maintenance forever.......

Cane creek headsets BLOW GOATS FOR QUARTERS!!...i totally agree...i have roached every one i owned, and they suck at sending new parts....garbage bearings, ****ty tolerances....

Just get the e.13 and ANY ICBM headset setup that fits...I have the cheapest FSA one, and I've been beating the **** out of it for almost a year, I pulled my bike apart a couple weeks ago, and the bearings are still smooth as glass...I was floored...even if the bearings were roached, they're super cheap to replace....the e.13 reducer is RAD...more adjustability, better angles....super tight tolerances...I totally recommend it...the problem with the cane creek is that they are WAY behind the ball, and the STILL don't use angular contact bearings in ANY of their 1.5 headsets...angular contacts are what make your chris king headsets so good, and that's what kind of bearing you'd use in the e.13...just grab one...you'll dig it...

If you come to any west coast nationals hit me up, i'll show you some insane trails....later shomper man!!!!

Ha, Ha, I caught BYO typing before thinking. There's got to be more than just a different crown race and top cap for this new headset to work. The bearings sit inside the head tube on the flush, where the bearings are outside of the headset in cups on the XXc std. You've got different bearings with a significantly smaller OD and differnt cups, and don't forget the blue plastic dust seals, along with the top cap and crown race you mention, essentially an entirely new headset.
