I have an x-9 on my dhr and the derail. won't line up with highest gear. Do i need to put a spacer between the hanger and derailleur?

No it should work just fine. I am assuming that you mean the smallest cog? Is this a newer DHR? Either way, there is no problem with that set up. Check for a bent hangar, check the limit screw...
