The only positives I see are that Chris is an actual mtb rider, and the EWS seems to have been well-managed overall.

None of that may matter in the context of a corporate media company focused on selling golf, pharma ads, and the Toyota Summer Saleathon to boomers.
whos gonna be the first mtb'er to start hawking boner pills?

I've only just caught up with this news, not a happy camper. I've been watching the DH for 15 years since the Freecaster days. Then good ol' UCI move in, go to charge Freecaster (who had done more for DH than the UCI ever will) a huge fee to show the World Champs and they say get fckd. Redbull then pick up the series and elevated it. Now the UCI (money hungry carnts, and only give a sht about doping road bike riders) sell out to the highest bidder. A sad day for the sport. UCI can get farked. I'm mad!

What are the prize purses for 1st, 2nd and 3rd on The World Cup? If it is going to be on TV even at 3 am across the world or in a few select states with whatever cable plan I expect at least $2500......

Have they mentioned if you need a Disney+ subscription, yet?
If you read the question thing on PinkBike, you'll see that Sorry, let me save you the time and say that no one knows. It doesn't even sound like they know.

Reading the crapshow of that ask me anything on Pink Bike, it kind of sounds like they offered up the goods ($$$$) without any real plan. Anyways thats what I interpret it, otherwise we wouldn't have received those generic non-answer responses.

to be fair to chris, he was being asked questions that need to be asked to discovery.

The GCN+ race pass is around 50 American imperial credits a year, and does cover a shitload of road racing if that's your thing. I'm assuming something similar for GMBN+ or whatever it'll be called because there is no way anything live will be free, boner pill and Michelob Ultra ads or not.

I'm hoping that it somehow gets bundled into the GCN+ without going up in price massively as that's the one thing on top of cable that I pay for, both for their documentaries and the road coverage.

Crankworks event coverage may be the biggest steaming pile of shit I've ever seen. Almost unwatchable. Espn did a better broadcast of the Reebok eliminator 30 years ago with a camcorder and a helicopter.

to be fair to chris, he was being asked questions that need to be asked to discovery.
Chris is the CEO of ESO, who is one of the ring leaders of these shenanigans. And I quote...

Warner Bros. Discovery and ESO will provide the organisation, media, production, broadcast and promotion of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup from 2023 to 2030.
So basically ESO and Discovery will be running the show. He should know the answers to those questions, but in fairness if he doesn't or perhaps if those plans don't exist, what was the point of that question answer session? Unless someone was looking for a roasting?

This will see Discovery Sports Events join forces with the Enduro Sports Organisation (ESO Sports) to deliver the organisation, media production and broadcast, promotion and commercialisation of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.

Discovery Sports Events, the global promoter and event management leader, will extend its relationship with the UCI to help promote the sport in support of further growing its global audience. ESO Sports, the owner and operator of the Enduro World Series and in whom WBD recently invested, will drive the project to globally unify mountain biking and elevate it to new levels, in collaboration with the UCI.

damn, i feel (a bit) sorry for chris, facing the PB mob in that AMA. 5 mins in & i'd be: FUCK YOU ALL, I'M OUTTA HERE.

that said, the amount of useful intel disclosed was certainly lacking. he's done some good work with EWS, so trying to remain optimistic. comments re: expanding reach (more events, new venues) are certainly positive. time will tell...

Yeah that was a joke. Little actual answers were given. Surely you'd schedule the AMA at a point when you had SOME information to give??

i think people are less concerned with paying for content than they are paying for a steaming pile of shit
I'd pay for coverage if it was similar quality to RedBull's stuff. I'm more worried I'm gonna need a month-to-month subscription to something stupid for 7 races a year.

you don’t expand reach by putting stuff behind paywalls…

Well it seems HBOMax is being gutted as part of being folded into Disco +.

Also, they made this to help us understand how the two networks are being differently positioned… lol.

Industry guy here. This isn't really for "US" viewers but for the industry and for the wall street.

It's still not settled what the parent app will be called. HBO has 3.5x the users Discovery+ has and much better brand recognition so I doubt it will get folded that easy unless they are total morons. They are mainly firing HBO Max but not HBO people. The people who were connected to the clusterfuck that was the HBO max launch and their mediocre Max exclusive shows (there were exceptions). HBO itself is not being gutted.

If it were me I'd either fold disco into HBO or do what Disney does in some countries and create a superbrand above the 2. Though that would still probably hurt HBO and HBO is the golden goose really. If that thing didn't have UX created by a blind person and it was available worldwide (a ton of countries have no HBO streaming) they'd rival Netflix easy. Probably not Netflix numbers but 70-80% of them.

I wasn't talking about linear TV per se. It's just most of the good HBO content is still done by people from the company known as HBO (call it HBO proper) and HBO max is a new entity that's being gutted by Discovery because it's a dumpster fire.

HBO - Production and Linear TV
HBO Max - Some new Streaming people (mostly fired) and some limited "exclusive" productions.

HBO has great content no matter where you see it (streaming or tv). It's the rest that's dumb

it still sucks big time when compared to Netflix or Amazon Prime. The interface is slow, bugged, and the subtitles are a nightmare sometimes.
i would say that interface speed is highly influenced by the device its installed on. i have a samsung smart tv and the software/apps are so slow i want to murder it. i've since switched to Roku Ultimate units, and not a single app runs slowly on it. i have 0 issues with hbo max on any of my rokus.

honestly out of all the streaming services we have, amazon prime is the worst. both for content and for the UI.

no experience w/ subtitles though, but i get that you probably make more use of them than i would.

I'll take HBO Max over Amazon Prime. Prime content video quality is all over the place, and some of their newer content sources have commercials in them even though they're "Prime" (FreeVee etc).
