Had it been a public place, I might have sided with his action of not showing his ID. But, the UCLA library is NOT a public area, it is a private institutions area explicitly there for the use of it's students.
It might be technically limited to students and library members, but isn't UCLA a state/publically funded university:clue:

from the ucla lib website:
The Library provides resources and services to non-UCLA users to the extent possible
i point that out b/c my school (from which a grad'd last year), had a few bums who would hang out & log on to the few public computers, presumably looking for jobs. as long as they were doing something like this (and not sleeping on the couches or taking whores' baths in the loo), they were "overlooked".

this is curious, however: are readers here sure the library & its facilities are publicly accessible before 11 p.m.?

A disobedient citizen? A cop's nightmare? Actually, you're probably right, after all he was called Mostafa.

He's an Iranian American, should be tazered regardless of anything else.
aha ok sacasm got it (edit)

sorry about posting this in the lounge
I don't normally go to the Pol, forums so i didn't look for it here
it completely discusts the situation in general and the ignorant people that support the police in this case

Watchin' you. Writing it all down.
Like I said brown and muslim, he definately was deserving it. He should make like the Wayans brothers in White Chicks so the man don't hate on him like that..... but then he would probably get date raped while the campus fuzz is out tazzing other brown people.

big difference..........i'm assuming that if you don't have a student ID, you aren't allowed in the library. if you don't show them an ID, you should be kicked out, its pretty simple. i don't think they made up that rule just for ****s....
$tinkle's post shows that the UCLA library is available to the public, maybe not after 11, but yes generally it is. So what is the difference?

FWIW, I posted those links to show that maybe there are situations where you should not comply with the orders of a police officer as a challenge to Echo's position that we should always be good little :monkey:s and do as we are told.

Ooh yeah, let's round up the ignorant scum of this world and get them out of the gene pool. I think we should start with those that have no idea of grammar.

Then we can do the Arabs.

problem is 'cops' don't understand tasers and the affects.

why didn't the students jump the security?

you speaking out your ass again LO? EVERY cop that carries a tazer MUST go through training which includes being "tazed".

i was able to recover in less than 15 seconds and stand up. so this kid was still resisting and kept getting tazed. i personally would have just picked the kid up and dragged him outside but perhaps there were extenuating circumstances as to why the kid had to walk out on his own. the video doesn't show what their initial reason for being there was and your e-speculation is ridiculous.
i'm not condoning their action but saying that a tazer is inhumane compared to, say...pepper spray or "hard hands", both of which are authorized to be used on resisting subjects, is ignorant. would you rather have a sore arm from having it twisted every which way but the right way, burning eyes/face/sinuses for several hours or a jolt for about 3 seconds where the pain stops immediately and the only lasting effect is the tiny needle prick from the barbs?

jon - call me and i'll set you up on a ride-along with me. your perspective on why force is sometimes necessary will change drastically. don't confuse the local law/ordinances with your hatred and high school views of federal government.

At the max setting?

Didn't sound like the tazer(s?) was set to tingle.

I had a friend of mine zap me with a stun gun once. The whole left side of my body didn't work too well for more than 15 seconds (he hit me in teh luv handle). A tazer blast is more incapacitating no?

You've used one these I assume. Have you ever zapped someone and not had them be able to move?

Manimal - although typically I agree with you, in this case I think it's the case of someone having a toy that they shouldn't.

I find it VERY difficult to justify using a tazer 5 to 6 times on a subject because he was in a LIBRARY doing his homework without an ID.

He may have mouthed off and been a total A-hole, but that does not justify using a weapon (and a tazer is a weapon) on him. As I said in another thread; the tazer was initially intended to be used as alternative to deadly force, and is being grossly misused a lot!

Cops should just do what they do best, beating up hippies. No body gets upset when they see a hippy getting beat up.

Ok, but back to the main question: Was this guy resisting to the extent that tasering him was necessary? There seems to be eyewitness accounts that he was already walking out of the library when he was confronted by the police officers.

And then I have to ask: Is going limp in a police officer's arms considered resisting arrest by most police departments?

There's no doubt the cops over-reacted. IMO the kid didn't deserve anything more than accidentally ramming his loud-mouthed, entitled face into the patrol cars doorjam.

and i can touch my nose with my tongue. does that mean that mostafa can too?

not everyone will be affected by a tazer in the same way. plus you didn't get zapped in the 'drive-stun' setting like he did. not to mention he yelled that he has a medical condition. but by all means, a kid resisting to be humiliated by the police by being dragged out of a library for christ's sake should require the same force that the police force is trained to give violent criminals. many witnesses said he was on his way out at the time, why not let him leave peacefully?

See this is where I think some of you people are not living in the real world. Security wasn't there because they were wandering around aimlessly and happened upon the situation. They were called there because this guy acted the fool enough to get the cops called on him.

As I said, go to a library and act like enough of an ass to get the cops called on you, then when the cops get there, keep right on acting like an ass. See what happens.

Mustafa's situation would not happen to anyone with a brain.

concurence w/ my closet winger, and to add: maybe if all the students carried tazers, this wouldn't happen.

Good point. Pointdexter assumes the Weaver stance, sets the tazer on "please, your actions annoy me" and returns the library to its former calm.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times.
Quote from one of the articles. Video pretty much confirms that. Yeah, sounds like he was acting like a total ass - how dare he not want to get accosted and dragged out of a building he was already exiting. The nerve.

Things just kicked off at Kerckhoff Coffeehouse on campus.

As I understand it, Mostafa was on his way out after initially delaying.

[snip]At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to

leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not

exit the building immediately.

out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an

Watch the video. Mostafa and the police are at the entrance to the computer lab. If he had refused to leave, would this whole thing not have started in the aisle adjacent to the computer he was using?
