In the light of the latest news coming out of Spain, according to which the information from the Operación Puerto investigation cannot be used for sports-disciplinary proceedings, Discovery Channel is reported to have made the first move on Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, who may be free to choose a new team if he is cleared. Spanish AS.com reports that Johan Bruyneel has made the German champ an offer to lead his team during the next season.

You saying it's a false report or that you just don't like it?

Face it... Disco wants to win... they dont care if they do it with an american or not, Lance said so himself. What I think sucks is that, with Ullrich on board, Levi wotn be the guy everyone is working for. Personally I'd like to see how Levi does with the support of a strong team like disco.

As much as I like Levi, he always rides great before and after the Tour, but during he seems to slip a bit.
This kinda would suck for him though, it's like being demoted to second-string. Assuming Jan can actually get it together. Maybe Lance can be his personal coach?

Well, if the evidence shows that he was doping BUT the evidence can't be used against him because it was a private operation or whatever, then why the hell is it ok for him to still race? It's just a silly deal.

I think Operation Puerto has been a total disaster. Guys are accused, banned from racing, but no official charges have been made?

I think Ullrich and Basso are guilty, but to ban them without an official charge makes the whole process look ridiculous.

It's just a big witchhunt. Not to say that there aren't witches out there, or maybe that Basso or Ulle was up to something they shouldn't have been, but it happens every couple of years.

I'd like to see him get back, redeem himself, but maybe it's just the attachment I have to him as the underdog/guy who woulda...coulda...but didn't...

On a side note, big ups to the usual suspects for keeping the road forum rocking!

I don't think it was a witch hunt. I think they had coded evidence which they have not put 2 + 2 together, but by leaking it, the Spanish authorities blew it.

Take for example the Barry Bonds case. They are trying to force his trainer to give it up by putting him in jail, arresting reporters, etc. The only difference is that everyone knows Bonds is on the juice...

This fat contract will be Jan's kickback for letting Lance win all those years.

 :clue:

Levi kicks butt but not when the elite guys bring their A-Game. He does really well in the Tour but not quite enough on a consistent basis to win. I hope that changes.

Bruyneel denies interest in Ullrich

Johan Bruyneel has adamantly denied the recent news reports that the Discovery Channel Team is signing Jan Ullrich. Bruyneel said, "I am currently not in any negotiations with Jan Ullrich to become a part of the Discovery Channel. Although I believe Jan is a world-class rider, our roster for 2007 is nearly complete and Jan will not be a part of our Team." The denial may be moot, as Ullrich will most likely be unable to race next season. UCI president Pat McQuaid has said that he would seek to block Ullrich and any other rider involved in the Operation Puerto investigation from racing.
It really didn't make much sense especially with the pile of guns that Discovery has. Plus they are in the process of renegotiation with Discovery Channel. The Jan brings too much baggage.

I disagree. The Jan has a better chance of winning a big tour than any of the riders currently on their squad. Perhaps you are being mistaking his massive thighs for the baggage.

Don't believe it. Disco has so far managed to keep pretty clean and distance itself from the investigations, they are not keen to be formally linked to a suspect doper. Like you said, they are also currently working on a sponsorship extension. They will not officially admit any talks until the Jan is cleared.

I agree. US fans are not happy about Landis and the scandals in baseball, t & f, etc. No way would an American team welcome a doper, especially one who was Lance's pawn.

Okay I believed it, then I didn't believe it and now I'm believing it again.

I hate being so freakin' wishy washy....

I thought Discovery got rid of most of those guns....I'm still waiting to see what the team is gonna look like in '07.....who's left? Leiphiemer and Danialson?

Paulinho

Then today they added Tony Cruz back and Brian Vandborg.

Its a pretty good lineup. I'd say all in all improved. Though missing some of the senior leadership.
