Anyone know the tooth capacity of a short cage 2003 ish Ultegra rear 9 speed derraileur? Hoping to use it with a 32t up fron and a 12-23 on my dh bike.
I run a short cage ultegra with a 36t ring on the front and a 11-34t cassette in the rear. shifts with no problem. I've been running it like that for about 3 years now.

I think max cassete is 11-27. If you use a bigger cassete (32 or 34) the derreileur will hit the bigger cog. It will fit, but you will hear a metal sound (the derreileur hitting the cassete). 12-23 is OK.
The size of the front chainring doesn't matter (if it's a single ring)...you set the chain length accordingly, and all the cage does is take up the slack that's let in and out as you shift up and down the cassette.
Shimano says 27t is the largest cog a roadie mech can handle, but most of us have used them up to 32t cogs without a problem of any kind.
