harsh. I read he climbed it more than 50 times. Its not a tech climb. Probably can do it in jeans and running shoes in the summer, alot like the Mt. Adams south route. Snow ledges are decieving though. It's a bummer.

I don't see that as Darwin in action...this guy understood the risks involved and most likely went about his very dangerous pastime with the utmost safety.

But this is Charles at his finest....

Hey, stuff like this happens, and you'd think you'd would watch your step, but it is impossible to watch every one.

This reminds me of a guy, great rider, rides lots of DH. But in China Camp, an XC park, he puts his foot down while waiting on an uphill singletrack, fell backwards off the trail, and died.

I call that tragic, not stupid.

We used to do that behind my friends four wheelers.

Of course the 225 moto4 was a lot less fast and powerful compared to what they are doing it with now.

Darwin died in 1882. How is it he is giving away awards in 2010? Can someone Splain that to me? I am off to go Ice fishing, I will check here for the answer after I get home. It's kind of warm out today and the Perch like the open water by the edge of the ice. I'll walk out there, but if the ice is crunchy/soft I'm coming home.

It seems more like an accident to me instead of a legit darwin award. Cornices are pretty tricky, as you have no idea where theyre going to break or when. Unfortunately for this guy, it was behind him.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Nobel died in 1896...and his award winners live on to keep on "making peace". At least the Darwin winners have had the decency to have offed themselves in the process of obtaining the award thus eliminating them from the gene pool.

NY zoo: Tiger that mauled man 'did nothing wrong'
JIM FITZGERALD, Associated Press
Updated 12:46 a.m., Saturday, September 22, 2012

The ticket booths are empty and the gates are chained shut at an entrance to the Bronx Zoo in New York, Friday, Sept. 21, 2012. Zoo officials say a visitor who leaped into an exhibit and was mauled by a tiger was alone with the 400-pound beast for about 10 minutes before being rescued.

NEW YORK (AP) — A 400-pound tiger that mauled a man who jumped from a moving monorail train and plummeted over a protective fence at the Bronx Zoo will not be euthanized and "did nothing wrong," the zoo director said.

The mauling happened Friday afternoon in the Wild Asia exhibit, where a train with open sides takes visitors over the Bronx River and through a forest, where they glide along the top edge of a fence past elephants, deer and a tiger enclosure.

Passengers aren't strapped in on the ride, and the man apparently jumped out of his train car with a leap powerful enough to clear the 16-foot-high perimeter fence.

The 25-year-old man was alone with a male Siberian tiger named Bashuta for about 10 minutes before he was rescued by zoo officials, who used a fire extinguisher to chase the animal away, said zoo director Jim Breheny. He suffered bites and punctures on his arms, legs, shoulders and back and broke an arm and a leg.

"When someone is determined to do something harmful to themselves," Breheny said, "it's very hard to stop that."

Bashuta was returned to a holding area where it usually sleeps at night and will not be euthanized, zoo officials said.

"The tiger did nothing wrong in this episode," Breheny said.

A hospital spokeswoman said the man was in stable condition Friday night, but his family has requested that no further information be released.

"If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different," Breheny said.

After zoo staff chased the tiger off, the man was instructed to roll under an electrified wire to get to safety, Breheny said. Zookeepers then called the tiger into a holding area, he said.

Bashuta is 11 years old and has been at the zoo for three years.

The Bronx Zoo, one of the nation's largest zoos, sprawls over 265 acres and contains hundreds of animals, many in habitats meant to resemble natural settings. Its exhibits include Tiger Mountain, Congo Gorilla Forest and World of Reptiles.

There are 10 tigers at the Wild Asia exhibit, but Bashuta was the only one on display at the time. There are no surveillance cameras in that area of the exhibit.

Zoo officials said they would review safety procedures but stressed that the situation was unusual.

"We review everything, but we honestly think we provide a safe experience," Breheny said. "And this is just an extraordinary occurrence ... somebody was deliberately trying to endanger themselves."

I don't think suicide by [insert method] counts. It needs to be outright stupidity leading to the unintentional demise of the individual.

I dunno experienced climbers should know to stay the hell away from cornices.
Yes, this is something a climber should learn very early on. They can be tricky though. From the top it's frequently difficult to tell where the cornice starts. It's all snow from above and they can be much larger than you might expect.

Some if my brother's friends did this in high school. The last time they did it one of them swung around a corner and into an oncoming car. He got lucky, it ripped the bumper off the car and broke his arm, but he survived.

Savannah Ramirez Accidentally Shoots Brother, Manuel Ortiz, Taking Facebook Photo Holding Gun: Cops

A woman accidentally shot and killed her 22-year-old brother while she posed for a Facebook photo with a gun, according to police.

ABC 15 reports that Savannah Ramirez, 19, had been playing with a gun and was posing for photos early Monday when the gun discharged, killing Manuel Ortiz, Phoenix police Sgt. Steve Martos said.

Police suspect Ortiz and his sister had been drinking. Martos said Ramirez would likely be charged with manslaughter if toxicology tests show she had alcohol in her system.

"Every New Year's Eve, this particular sister is going to be thinking about this for the rest of her life on how ... drinking overnight, playing with a gun and now shoots and kills her brother," Martos said, according to the Daily Mail.

Friends described Ortiz as a "kind, funny guy," who tried to pick people up when they were feeling low, according to The Sun.

"Brown’s husband, who said his wife was “like a kid when it snowed” is convinced.

"I just want everyone to understand how dangerous that type of sledding can be, especially without a helmet. I would advise people just not to do it at all," a mourning Henry Brown said Tuesday."
