Unfair business practice or just good business?

Adobe recently embedded a function whereby you can send your document directly from Acrobat to a local KinkosFedEx office for reproduction.

The print industry's complaint is that they've supported a PDF workflow and helped make Adobe Acrobat PDF what it is today and that Adobe is screwing over it's support base with this action.

I can totally see that arguement and my thought is, hey, good for Adobe for seeing and taking advantage of an opportunity.

So, unfair to the non-franchise shops who helped build the product's marketability -or- just smart business by Adobe?

I'm sure it is a safe bet that they are getting paid by kinkos for this agreement. I don't see what is unfair unless they prevent anyone other than kinkos from using it. Their risk is then pissing off their base customers who helped them grow, but seeing as though they are not a monopoly there is nothing unfair about it. That is just business.

I noticed that too. I don't like it. If you're rocking Acrobat 8 Pro, you should be smart enough to send a file without them holding your hand.

Subject: RE: FedEx Kinko's Agreement

We clearly blew it and I am sorry. We are looking at a number of solutions that can hopefully satisfy our existing loyal partners like yourself, that meets the constraints of our contractual commitments with Kinko's. I hope you can forgive us and will be patient with us.

Sincerely,
Bruce
Two possibilities:

1. They recognize the value of those shops that have supported them, realized that they're alienating them, but are under contract and will hopefully find a solution.

2. Email was total bullsh!t and it's just marketing spin to placate the masses until it's forgotten while reaping the benefits of Kinko's payments and still maintaining a positive image in the marketplace.

I sure hope they're serious cuz if they flat out lied about their regrets and expect us to shovel their marketing lies in our pie holes, well, that's much worse than just siezing a business opportunity.

If they don't come clean or fix the situation soon, then my shop will start pushing some other solution.

Why don't they create a workflow tool that allows any print shop to receive files? Watch FedEx buy Adobe or some ****...
