EOD update:
Heat 1 pretty much went to shit at the first corner. They go into turn 1 100' after the start/finish line at about 35mph. She was 3-back on the outside line (6th) and got pushed off track when the inside line kid (5th) blew his turn. 7-10 all ran up the inside putting her back to 11th. Her and 12th went at it for 6 laps, until she boggled a corner and went wide on one section, letting him pass. She never caught back up, so finished heat 1 in 12th. Lots of emotional... And lots of rubber on the bodywork of her kart.

Heat 2 was better: 12 > 10. Got split from the second group by about 15 kart lengths when one of the kids spun. Took her 5 laps to close back up to the group. The kid that spun caught her on lap 9, then dive bombed another kid, taking them both out. Not a great way to go up two positions, but that's racing. So she'll be starting tomorrow in 10th.

We watched her heat 2 video before dinner and her throttle timing has gotten really, really good. Once she caught back up to the group, she had multiple opportunities to make solid, inside line passes, but lifted or hesitated. She even had a dual kart pass opportunity which she didn't take. In all of them, she was consistently closing into and through the corner, but wouldn't hold the line, instead lifting and letting them walk with a now better exit speed She said that she's struggling with learning the limits of her kart's width.

She has a 5min practice then the final tomorrow. She knows that she has effectively nothing to lose at this point, so she's going to work on more aggressively taking positions.

Hannah was a shit show starting between the heats. She will not be coming to anymore races. Wifey was actually interested in the racing and felt that she learned a ton (which she wasn't expecting). She is a lot more comfortable seeing that Haley's class is the slowest only above the kid karts.

She had a chance to talk with a bunch of parents including our neighbor and saw just how much some people pour into this. Our neighbor told her that they will likely end up spending $20-25k this year and how he's low vs. other kids in his class. There are others with 5-6 karts, spare motors, individual mechanics & coaches, etc. who will spend $70-90k/yr. Our gross cost (including the original kart and related, and indoor racing) will be less than half of our neighbour's. Obviously the accident would have destroyed outdoor racing had our family friend (there are still truly amazing people out there, btw) and insurance not actually bought the new kart.

She had no idea that us running used tires for everything except actual race weekends wasn't the norm, while other families will go through a few sets of tires in a weekend. So having the shop pick Haley up made her see that Haley's got a lot there, if Haley wants to push herself to develop it fully. She also met the mechanics and shop owner, and a couple of the teenage girls who are the class up from Haley, which was a great opportunity for her to know the people whom we are talking about, but also supporting Haley.

So all-in-all, a good weekend so far - minus Hannah keeping all of us awake every night this week and losing her shit between the heats.

That’s the look a LOT of the really wealthy go for here. Carhartts, vintage trucks with an air compressor in the back (props), etc…
And I’m not kidding.

You can throw people off and have many days head start before people come looking for you.
