My friend Vince is the king of killing parts while climbing. I've seen him break a handlebar and a seatpost going uphill. Yesterday he snapped a Race Face Next LP crank in half:eek: I couldn't freakin believe it, Practically no one breaks cranks clean in half, even fewer uphill I imagine.

So is Vince a parts-killing freak of nature or do some of you monkeys have similar skills?:D He's not heavy either, under 200lbs.

I broke an old Alivio crank in half going up hill as well. You could tell that there was a fracture in the aluminum, as there was a bunch of discoloration inside. Other broken parts from going uphill: Seats, deraillures, chains, cassettes, hubs, pedals, chainrings, and tires have worn out.

Up hill crashes, however, are amazing. Don't let it happen to you, be sure to proceed up the trail slowly and carefully.

I haven't broken anything climbing, but I tend to fall more climbing or walking my bike. I was riding a trail in SLO, and I came up to a climb with big rocks. All of a sudden, while climbing, I had rolled down into a bush down off the side of the trail.

My friend and I joke about how dangerous it is walking as apposed to riding, becasue I can be a little clumsy when i'm off a bike.

edit: I forgot about the chain that I broke a while ago.

I know all too well. Try explaining how you got whiplash crashing uphill:D

Chains are the only thing I've fried partswise on the climb.

Wumpus has the best uphill crash to date, that I have seen. It was nice. He used 6" of travel flippin' over the bars on a root. hahahaha

What trail in SLO did you crash going up?

I've crashed on most.

It was on morning glory. It think it was like near the middle -to the bottom of the hill. It's like 8-15' climb with a big square rock.

uhm - you broke about 8" off of each leg of your shorts one day, it seemed. Please tell us they fell off on your way up the hill.

I wonder if I were to leave RM for a few years and then come back -- you think folks'll still be talking about SS's hotpants?

Oh, and I snapped my handi-dandy ho-made half-link on my first single speed hammering up a hill. Then my knee hammered into the stem. It hurt my feelings.

I cracked the sole of my almost new Nike shoes a while back. I forget what they were called, but they were the super-nice, Italian-made, $200 ones. No warranty either, bastards!
Then a week later I cracked the other sole. Sidis for me now...

I snapped the end off my bars while I was holding the barend. Could have been the two hard crashes the week before.

I'm not talking about the handlebar that broke from corrosion when the bike fell over in the garage. This one was on the little uphill after you come down the top two switchbacks on Cali.

My dad was climbing that big hill at the Sea Otter and ripped his Shimano XT derraileur in half.

I've worn a bunch of parts out, but never any catastrophic failures. On my fixed gear I popped 2 teeth off the chainring climbing with a trailer but that's all.

Here goes:

Crank (3)
BB (1)
Chain (1)
Rear Hub (2)
Spoke (3 - stripped out of nipple)
Stem (Azonic shorty believe it or not)
Handlebar (1 - bent)
Seat (2)
Seatpost (2 - separate incidents from the seat failures)
Rear derailler (1)
BB bearings (numerous)
Headset (1)

In defense of the bike(s), a lot of the parts that broke were kinda cheap-o parts that came on stock '04 Rockhopper Comps and took a while to break, but a couple didn't take long, like the hubs and cranks. This may be a small part of the reason I only ride downhill now for the most part.

Hey, that happened to me as well. I had a pair of Nike Ligures (180 or so retail, I think...carbon sole...Italian made...). The carbon broke and the cleat punched through the sole. 'Course that was after about 2 years of use (raced DH with them too...)...and I got them for free....

Anyway, the only thing I've broken on the uphill is chains. Once I was on my road bike and hit a steep climb as hard as I could. I shifted right at the start and the chain went into the spokes and broke a few...so I guess I broke some spokes once...

This is all from UPHILL riding? Hmmm?

This is why you ride downhill? That's a laugh for me. I don't do crap to maintain my CX or trail bikes but on the DH bike crap is always breaking, coming loose etc.

I know that climb well, I've broken chains, sliced knees, and gotten flat tires riding up that thing. Not big or hard, but just a pain in the ass. I'd pay money to ride Morning Glory right now, such a fun trail. I think I learn something new everytime I ride that trail.

HaHa Suckerrrr! I rode it this weekend!

The "old men" I ride with up here needed a guide for an SB trip, so I tagged along. We rode Tunnel (once), Cold Springs (three times), Romero (once), Tower (once... with old men complaining the whole way up... and down...), and Morning glory (once) to finish it off.

I tell ya, after a weekend in SB, then Tower, Morning Glory is just that much more fun. Litterally couldn't go fast enough. Traction was probably the best I've ever seen on that trail, which is pretty good considering I lived there for five years.

Lightweight XC parts (on not the highest end bike as I mentioned) vs. burly non-lightweight DH parts. I'm always maintaining my DH bike in terms of tuning it, and I still do break things, but not nearly as often as I did with XC.
