Family wants to go to California, to see the ocean.

What would be the best beach area?
Do they want to see the ocean or swim in the ocean? If it’s the latter, you’re talking southern california exclusively.

I'd opt for big sur.

Hermosa Beach was cool when I lived there 15 ish years ago. Still had a surf town vibe. But it's probably Jackson hole expensive now.

Took the kiddos to Carlsbad a few years which had beaches and Legoland.

2 years ago we went to Port hueneme a sleepy military base town with moderately affordable Beach housing and my son took surfing lessons in Ventura...

Tons of nice beaches all the way to Santa Barbara

I'd skip Big Sur until the road is open.

And of course my favorite beaches in California are in Oregon which is to say the Lost Coast and further north...
