I've had a lot of dogs and cats my whole life and always got by without a $300 Dyson, guess I just don't see the appeal. My $60 Bissel doesn't exactly leave large quantities of cat hair still embedded in the carpet.

Ok I've decided!


I'm going to continue my never ending support of big business and big China and I'm going to buy a cheap $60-75 vacuum from Walmart based on whichever one looks least like a rocketship and is bagless.

But bagless will still expose you to dust more than bag vacuums. As the allergy sites say, HEPA bag vacuum are best to those worried about dust exposure and you won't have to deal with those annoying prefilters you'll eventually have to clean.

Just something to keep in mind while shopping. I have dust allergies so vacuums where the dirt holding chamber has the filter right in it mean too much exposure to the dust and dirt for me. My Bissel has a totally seperate chamber so I just pull out the cup, dump it in the trash and put it back in the vacuum.

I agree, syadasti, but I hate buying bag replacements. So it's a good compromise. I don't mind cleaning the filters once every 6 months or so.

Well I've only bought the bagless myself, and I think its a more eco/$$$ friendly choice, but like you can see the annoying/allergy points.

Actually, they rated 40 (by my count) and the lowest rated Dyson was #19 if I am counting correctly, and the best is #8. Also, the last Dyson listed is the last cleaner in the "very good" category, then the rest fall under "good."

Stosh, I can't do a print screen because of how the web page is designed. There is a small scrolling area within the webpage with all the ratings.

The brands in the top 10 are, in order:

dyson is the best right now.. but pricey. Oreck is great too and a bit more reasonable

I think the Riccar bagged canister is the one my sister has from the LVS (local vacuum shop, heh). She won't clean the prefilters enough, so she got the bagless.

Who the hell pays $400 for a vacuum?

Some of the $60 bissels will do just as good a job, and you can buy friggin 6 of them for the same price if you are worried about them not lasting as long??

My parents have a kenmore at their place, and it is a good 20 years old and still going strong. Only issue is that the bags no longer exist, so my dad has to squish some off brand bag in there.

i sold vacuums a few years ago at sears. no joke. sold microwaves and sewing machines too.

dyson performed better when used for a long time without emptying. the beaterbar wasn't as good as the kenmore motorized ones. initial suction wasn't as good as the kenmore either. there are obviously tradeoffs for both. i'd reccomend the top of the line kenmore upright vac with motorized attachments (or non-motorized attachemtns if you want to save some weight) or the top canister vac or the dydon animal. the dyson will work better for short-med carpet if you ahve pets. the suction will be more consistent and will average better then a vacuum with a bag over the long run. the hepa-grade filter on the dydon is cleanable with water. however, if you have long/ shag carpet, a stronger beaterbar that comes on the kenmores will be a big plus. it will be able to clean deap into the carpet by agitating it more to get out the pet hair that's deep down. if you get the clothe bags then you will get decent suction throughout. those are pricey though. the air-out filters is what matters to people with allergies. kenmore uses hepa ones that you replace about twice a year. dyson's is washable in the sink.

get the dyson if:
-can afford it
-have pets
-would never get around to buying new bags for a bag vac anyways
-do not have long carpet in high-traffic areas
-do not roughhouse with the vacuum (the pastic is breakable)
-hate heavy vacuums
-like bragging to soccer moms that you've got a dyson
-like freaky looking tools and try to pawn them off as "art" to neighbors
-like tools with interesting contraptions that you can confuse your mother-inlaw with (and possibly amaze a small child) (they really are pretty nifty.
-like seeing firsthand what's in your carpet that you vacuumed up


if not, i'd reccomend the kenmore. slightly less suction as it fills but more powerful beater bar for attachments. have to buy bags and filters which may end up costing more then the dyson depending how long you keep it.


if you ask a sales associate, and mention dyson, they'll try to sell you a dyson. you get almost double the commission for selling one of those over a kenmore.

and i'd spring for the protection plan for 2 years at least if i was getting a vacuum, unless it was some cheapo one.

My Bissel almost sucked up the guinea pig (surprisingly, she's not scared of it).

The best part of the bagless ones is watching all the crap from your floor swirl and collect in the clear plastic container :eek:

I do like my Kenmore canister. Canisters rule if you want to clean out the car, vacuum the top of doorjambs, plus you've got the power head for the carpets. And bags don't cost that much, $6 every few months for half a dozen.

Costco has them. Pretty fvkcing cool device. I dunno how good they work though, seems like the would be best for hardwood floors.

Get an old cast aluminum Kirby. You will want to burn your carpet after 1 or 2 uses.

My mom bought an old Kirby when I was in high school. I hated it and refused to use it, damn thing must have weighed 40lbs.
