Vassar Farms, Poughkeepsie--Snow ride

Riding on a frozen crust was like riding on a crispy pavement. With this covering it is possible to ride anywhere; over streams through areas covered by underbrush in summer, it was as if the woods had a white pavement on top of them.

The morning was below freezing and then warming to 32 by noon, giving me a limited time before this hard layer turned to mush and my fun ended.

Very few dog walkers and hikers had been through the area leaving me with pristine unbroken snow. The only sketchy area was a small log crossing over a partly frozen stream. (Yes, I walked it.)

Near noon the snow started to melt and I knew my time was up. Eventhough I have studded tires on my rigid bike there was plenty of traction with regular knobbies.

Here is a timed self-portrait on a snowy bridge with my late model ride. This beats riding a trainer anyday!

I only had one spill coming down a steep drop.

On the top there was plently of traction dropping down into a pine covered shadow where the snow had a covering of ice on top from the melt off the branches.

I slid out on my side and continued to slide down to the end.
It was a blast, and if no one sees you fall, does it really count?:twitch:

I'm thinking we need to repair that bridge on BoJangles before it gets swampy.
Today I tried to dissassemble a few pallet-like crates at work (Woodshop)and then recycle the wood for building (48")short sections of a ladder style bridge to replace to rotten remains of Mr. Bojangles bridge. After getting 15 minutes into it I realized it would easier to buy wood to build up a bridge. The pallets were shot with too many nails to make disassembly easy :disgust: and the crappy pine probably would only last a season before it rotted out.

On the plus side I can use the shop any weekend to construct this sort of thing once I get materials.

It'd be easy to pick up some materials at Home Depot and use some larger logs as stringers. I can carry a hammer, small saw and nails in my pack if we do go and repair some stuff.

where? We're always riding around here at Vassar, Stewart and the 909 in particular. Let us know if you're around and we'll let you know when/where we're riding!
I'm currently looking for a job in Upstate NY. My wife and I moved out here to CA a year and a half ago but now that we're about to have our first baby we decided it will be best to be near family. I don't quite know where we'll end up yet.

I'll deffenitely be looking for people to ride with whenever I finally get a job there!

Nice report!

A little OT, but have you heard the new Lemonheads album with the tune about Poughkeepsie. Damn good album, and damn good song.
