WTF? So some cheerleaders go at it and the news ends up showing it all day on every channel to the point some 12 year olds imitate it and post it on Photobucket.

24hr news channels suck.

<edit> Now they are showing the "new" video.

I agree.

I know my son is only a month old, but since I don't know when he'll start absorbing any crap on TV, we decided not to watch anything that wouldn't be appropriate for him when he's two years old (while he's in the TV room).

So, no news for us exactly cuz of garbage like that.

I've been watching a lot of baseball lately

I think it's a great idea, and more kids should videotape their beatings. It makes the prosecution of such individuals much, much easier. :D
And what's the worst a 12 year old gets? A stern talking to? Advice on how to fight properly?

Better than showing people dying in Iraq. I much rather keep that out of sight and watch girls fight- I've never seen that before and we need to make laws to limit girls having the freedom to fight and legislate what people put on the internet. Thank goodness we can't see pictures of American coffins anymore!!

instead of just shielding him from everything, just make him aware of what is good and what is bad in terms of stuff on television. teach him not to imitate everything that he sees.

hell, when i was 5 my dad let me watch terminator 2 with him, but i didn't go out and attack anyone randomly after that.

would you be so kind as to post all the advice your extensive experience raising a child has taught you?

TIA!
Actually I've got 10 years coming up in June and I generally agree with BeanpoleBoy. Obviously extremes of violence and hard core porn are off limits but rather than not let my boys watch it, I'll watch it with them if the content is above their maturity level but they still want to watch it. I'll try to explain things to them rather than just say that's bad you can't watch it.

dunno, but 8 teens are facing felony counts since they were dumb enough to videotape themselves... as for 12 year olds? not sure, but getting hauled into court and 100 hours of community service would be a pretty good start. don't forget, kids do stupid stuff all the time, but the new(ish) trend of videotaping themselves doing it just makes catching them and punishing them that much easier.

I also don't blame the news if someone goes out and copies what's shown... where's the blame for the idiotic 12 year olds?? they go out and beat the crap out of some girl, and they're blameless but somehow it's the *media's* fault?? when I was 12 years old, I knew the difference between right and wrong, and beating the crap out of someone definitely fell into the latter category...

I'm not saying the media is 100% responsible, but when CNN and others are showing it at least once an hour every hour, I would say that's over-exposure.

When asked why they did it, they said because they saw it on the news.

Yes, the parents should be held accountable, but if 24hr news channels didn't continually show it ALL DAMN DAY, then it certainly wouldn't hurt.

Keep in mind, I have up to 4 tv's in my office that are on all day while at work. After seeing these videos enough times, it makes ME want to go beat some 12 year olds ass.

That's what I do. OnDemand cable programming and HD broadcasts don't test itself, you know.

Currently on right now:
ESPN Sports Center
Headline News
FSN Miss vs. USC baseball
FitTV Sexy Yoga
Oh.

OMG, I'd go insane if I had to watch TV all day... even if it was sports and sexy yoga.

It's not like I stare at it blankly for 8 hours, but I also don't rush home to turn on the TV after work either. Some people wonder why I don't have digital cable and a DVR at home. But they fail to realize I have a dozen or more DVR's at work.

Some movies on rotation get very old very fast, so random cable channel switching helps. If only there was a way to automate the validation of picture and sound clarity, it would make my job a whole lot easier.

I haven't heard of 12 year old girls sitting at home all day watching CNN. Or Foxnews. If they saw it, it was probably a clip online, forwarded from friends...

When asked why they did it, they said because they saw it on the news.
Baloney. They did it because they either weren't taught, or forgot, about actions and consequences. Every time I've seen it on the news, it's been followed or preceded with "this is pretty disturbing", or "these girls are now facing felony assault and kidnapping charges", etc. Maybe if the parents of the 12 year olds had brought up the topic at the dinner table and talked about how actions have consequences, and that these girls sat in JAIL for several days, this might not have happened.

The smut we must stop
The trash we must bash
The Laughter and fun
Must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss

What happened was the cheerleaders taped it to post on YouTube but got busted before they could. The news organizations aired it enough so that someone took it from there and posted the video on YouTube.

The 12 year olds saw it on YouTube as posted from someone who got it off the news.

Had the news NOT aired the video, it would not have been posted.

What good is it to stop someone from posting a video, then airing it enough so that someone else can then post it?

My issue is there was NO NEED TO SHOW THE VIDEO! Let alone turn around AND SHOW THE COPYCAT VIDEO!

Some would disagree and I'd like to get an understanding as to why such a video should be shown at all. Not talking about profits for the news outlet, but the value to society?
i think you very well know the answer to this: there exists a remote, yet possible, chance (hope?) they were going to make her do unnatural acts as her punishment.

there's a significant segment of frustrated fathers to teens who long for their kids' friends, who are sadly out of reach for them.

essentially, American Beauty nailed it

^^^^^ I have to say, that's a very dangerous path to go down, if all items on the news must be screened for their value to society. things like war footage, dissent, murders, protest marches, undercover sting operations, etc could all be deemed "unhealthy for society" and not shown.

I personally feel that the video gave a better understanding of exactly what went on in that house. If it was a print story of "girl beat up by classmates" would you really give it a second glance? Maybe I'm desensitized, but I'd think "that goes on every day" and skip to something else. The video, however, captures the brutal nature of the attack that would be missed by another type of media.

Oh, I'm not advocating censorship, especially since media and politicians can't censor themselves for crap.

I personally feel that the video gave a better understanding of exactly what went on in that house.
I'm just not sure why we need "a better understanding"?

i would make a back-patting "great minds" remark, but this seems pretty straight forward.

as vastly different opinions i may hold among those here, i think this has the most appeal for all.

Agreed. If anything, why couldn't the news station just show a still picture from the original video and describe what went on rather than show the whole vid for someone to record the broadcast and put on youtube. Just so a bunch of copycat "I wanna be popular" kids didn't get any bad ideas.

I guess I wanna be popular too, as I also put riding vids on youtube.

I would agree that you (and I am guessing many others, based on this) are desensitized if you need to see the girl get beaten to understand how bad it is.

If I hear someone gets attacked by multiple people and winds up in the hospital. I figure it was brutal enough to require a hospital visit. I have been in quite a few fights growing up, but was never hospitalized for any of them. So I can figure that it would be more brutal than anything I endured without the need for visual aids.

Now if I am a member of a jury, then viewing the tape would be helpful to gain a full understanding.

Yeah, I don't think so. If kids beat up someone because they're copying something on TV, those kids are messed up and it's on them and their parents/family, not CNN. Should they not report on any crime then, lest it give people ideas? I know every time I see a homicide on the local news I get urges.

Me too!!:pirate2:

But really man, yes of coarse it's mostly the parents fault but for something with so much power to just flaunt it like that and show and do what they want. Just think, that incident might not even happened if it wasn't instigated by the news broadcasting the issue. That girl got the **it kicked out of her by more than a few people for no real reason.
Don't worry, I like seeing crazy **it on video but if youtubes banning it, maybe the god **mned major news networks should.
