I remember meeting some dude from Germany at the old White Castle trails in NJ years ago. He was in NYC and took a train or 2 to get there plus some pedaling. He didn't speak much english and of course my German isn't too vast but we were throwing hands around and didn't need to talk too much to enjoy riding dirt (or should I say broken glass given the sketchiness of White Castle).
