Had the 'pleasure' of doing monitors for Ace Frehley this weekend. Wasn't a bad show, but as the paper put it "Arena show in a club played at arena volume"...

Smoking band of young kids, great guys, great crew. Really loud. Ace's guitar rig was around 118db +/-3db for the entire show (or so my meter said).

At the club that I that I worked for we tried to avg. around 118 db at FOH.
Personally, thats a bit loud for an entire show. I'm more comfortable at 110 or less. 118 at FOH means (depending on distance from PA) at least 122+ at the hang...

Be careful, hearing loss has a way of sneaking up on you.

If you make your living with your ears, get yourself tested every year, and know where your 'weaknesses' are...

I DONT KNOW HOW YOU DRUMMERS DO IT. (can u hear me now)

Some guys snare drums hurt at 15 feet away. Then they want me to put that in the monitor?

I will make your ears bleed if you ask, but I don't want to stand in front of some drum fills. Sometimes I dont even need to cue up their mix if its facing me...

What you saying I can't hear you.
the room has alot of nodes coming off the stage that screw with the sound so we need to crank it that loud to get over them (it's a dirty rock club with an owner that has no clue what's going on when it comes to sound)

Front Range, dude...
What, no makeup and platform boots? Kinda loses some of the novelty if someone isnt breathing fire and parting his hair with his tongue.

I make it easy on monitor guys.

1 wedge stage left behind the hihat. Kick drum in there please. A little 5-7k boost. That's it. Nothing else.

I have used hearing protection live only a couple times. Most of the time I set far enough behind the backline that it's not an issue. My ears are pretty well calloused I guess. I do have some loss, but not as much as one would think.

I am looking into using the Shure in-ears I just bought with a personal amp. After 23 years of live shows, it might be time. :D

Wow! He's still around?

How was it? Who did production? NE? or AI?
Yeah he's doing a project called D: Drive right now with Phil Naro. A friend of mine is doing drums for him. This was a benefit at Water Street Music Hall, production was all in-house. So fun to play there after doing clubs for 2 years.

LOL Phil Naro!

The replacement vocalist for Talas... Guess that everything seeks its own level after a while...

I'm pretty sure that both of them were at the casino for the Lou Gramm show, and I think I remember them talking about D: drive...

How was it?

Yeah Donnie still works with Lou Gramm. They had a sit-in bass player so the show wasn't perfect, but the rocked it proper.

Nice and easy is good.
I've had to do some weird ass sh*t for drummers. 4 discrete mixes L/R wedges & IEM, 1 sub mix, 2 thumpers, toms panned across 2 mixes, cymbals in in ears, the works...

As long as the entire band has IEM, life is good. If you still have wedge mixes around, be careful what you put in your ears. A vocal mic that takes off in the wedges will definitely take the 'shine' off your hearing for an hour or so... You can have the monitor guy 'Y' channels just for the IEM's, but if that mic takes off it's still gonna hurt.
