My wife and I are thinking about moving to Asheville, NC. When is the best time to visit this area, spring or summer? Also, is there any freeride/dh riding in this area or will I be better off bringing the trail/xc bike?

We are currently living in Texas but will be moving soon. So far the places we are considering are Asheville, Northern Cali, Durango or Colorado Springs. I am also looking for some opionions from the local riders on the mountain bike scene in the Asheville area. I prefer dh or freeride but also like xc rides.
